The Future of Next-Generation Social Networking: Insights from Paparazzi and Clubhouse

Introduction:
The ever-evolving landscape of social media platforms has given rise to new contenders like Poparazzi and Dispo. However, these platforms lack the addictive qualities that make apps like Snapchat, Instagram, and TikTok so popular. One reason for this is that they have removed or limited the ability to quantitatively visualize our value. While these apps may have excellent concepts and products, without a solid distribution strategy, they face tough times. Social apps that require friends to be present are particularly vulnerable as identity is at the core of social media.

The Concept of Identity:
Identity is a crucial aspect of social media platforms. The concept of "accumulation" suggests that our identity is a culmination of everything we have done. Imagine that all the photos of your past experiences are compiled, forming your identity as a person. However, instantaneous expression disrupts this notion. While it is true that my identity is the result of everything I have done, in the moment, I am living that experience, not living in my phone.

Distribution Strategy:
Paparazzi has utilized the pre-order mechanism of app stores to achieve impressive download numbers. On its official release day, half a million people downloaded the app. A recent example is the chat app Honk, which successfully created a TikTok account for promotion, resulting in viral success. This is the reason people desire and continuously return to platforms - the feedback loop of affirmation or disappointment. The illusion of connection and the desire to be truly seen or heard, disguised as "likes" and "hearts," drives engagement.

The Ugly Truth:
The unfortunate reality is that social media platforms trap us in the patterns of clicking and scrolling, and we, in turn, crave this behavior. People hold their identities in such high regard that it is unlikely an app will function well beyond a certain number of friends, say beyond 50. It becomes less about who is tagged the most or who is socializing with whom, and more about being depicted as private, authentic, and true to oneself. The sharing is limited to the scope of imagination of how your friends perceive you. The importance of valuing one's identity depends on the context of where identity is portrayed. While Instagram raises the pressure, Paparazzi's format (raw) does the opposite.

Clubhouse and the Entrepreneurial Spirit:
Clubhouse has become a platform that embodies the thoughts and aspirations of entrepreneurs. As I studied architecture in college, I began contemplating the concept of space. I realized that space could create new opportunities for people to interact and have valuable experiences. I fell in love with it. It was during my third year of studying architecture that the light bulb went off in my mind. I realized that the new frontier for designing space and fostering interactions was in the digital realm.

Conclusion:
The future of next-generation social networking lies in striking a balance between addictive qualities and preserving the authenticity of identity. To achieve this, social media platforms must incorporate the concept of accumulation while providing a distribution strategy that fosters continuous engagement. Here are three actionable pieces of advice:

  1. Emphasize the importance of genuine connections: Develop features that prioritize meaningful interactions and promote authentic relationships, rather than focusing solely on popularity contests.
  2. Enhance the distribution strategy: Implement innovative techniques like pre-ordering to generate early buzz and attract a significant user base upon release.
  3. Foster a sense of self in the digital realm: Create an environment that allows users to express their true identities without succumbing to the pressures and anxieties associated with social media.

By understanding the shortcomings of existing platforms and incorporating these insights, social media can evolve into a space that truly reflects and nurtures our identities.
