The Way In Which We Take Notes Gives Us Insight Into Who We Are. A good way to see how different we look at what’s important is the Social Web Highlighting Glasp that’s driven by the curators using the service to highlight and annotate text from various online sources. When we read the same sentence, we usually highlight it, but it is not always a given. Sometimes we value totally different things, and then the knowledge that we have collected is increased just like that.

Whenever I’m not using Glasp for highlighting, I visit the site and find interesting links and information that I can store in my PKM. I have found that the community curates very interesting and exciting posts for creative writers like me, which is very exciting. There is nothing strange about that either, but in those cases, I believe a more individual approach would give the notes a deeper meaning. It would also increase learning. Or at least that is what I think from a personal perspective. (note: I didn't have this perspective, it's insightful and interesting.)

Therefore, I would advise you to make sure you are using your uniqueness and your creative mind when you take notes. That will bring both your notes closer to who you are as well as your learning style. It will also be easier for you to recall that knowledge in the future.

Moving on to the topic of using Zettelkasten to boost creativity and productivity, we can learn a lot from Luhmann's system. Each card in his Zettelkasten had a unique index number or address, using numbers, letters, and occasional punctuation based on a branching hierarchy. This allowed for easy organization and retrieval of information.

Furthermore, Luhmann's system offered a low barrier to entry, which is important when tackling new projects. Psychologists have found that one reason we procrastinate is self-doubt and efficacy issues—the upfront costs of a new project often loom large when future outcomes are so uncertain. By having a system like Zettelkasten in place, you can break down complex projects into smaller, more manageable tasks, increasing your confidence and ultimately boosting your productivity.

In addition, the connections between notes are crucial in the Zettelkasten method. Similar to synapses between neurons, note links exponentially increase the value of the system. Luhmann would jot down the address of cards with related ideas on the bottom of each card, allowing him to jump across his note collection and make new connections among ideas. This decentralized network approach without any preconceived hierarchy allows for the growth of ideas without limitations.

While existing note-taking apps may lack certain functionalities of Zettelkasten, there are alternatives like Roam that offer features like backlinking and atomicity. Roam allows you to link and relate parts of notes to parts of other notes, making it a perfect fit for the Zettelkasten method. It even provides a graph of your links, allowing you to visualize the connections between ideas.

To summarize, the way we take notes provides insight into our unique perspectives and learning styles. Incorporating our creativity and individuality into note-taking can make the process more meaningful and increase our ability to recall knowledge. Implementing methods like Zettelkasten can boost creativity and productivity by breaking down projects into manageable tasks and fostering connections between ideas. Consider exploring tools like Roam that align with the principles of Zettelkasten and enhance the note-taking experience.

Three actionable advice to improve your note-taking and boost creativity and productivity are:

  1. Embrace your uniqueness: Take notes in a way that reflects your perspective and creative mind. This will not only make your notes more meaningful but also help you align your learning style with your note-taking process.
  2. Break down projects: When faced with a new project, use the Zettelkasten method or a similar approach to break it down into smaller, manageable tasks. This will increase your confidence and productivity by reducing self-doubt and efficacy issues.
  3. Foster connections between ideas: Whether using Zettelkasten or a note-taking app like Roam, prioritize linking and relating parts of notes to one another. This will help you make new connections and generate innovative ideas.

In conclusion, our note-taking habits reflect who we are as individuals and can significantly impact our learning, creativity, and productivity. By embracing our uniqueness, implementing methods like Zettelkasten, and fostering connections between ideas, we can enhance our note-taking experience and unlock new levels of creativity and productivity. So, next time you reach for that notebook or open a note-taking app, remember to approach it with intention and make it a reflection of your true self.
