The 3 Stages of a Product Manager's Career: From Shipping Products to Building Great Teams

When I first started my career as a Product Manager, I thought that the key to success was simply shipping products. I focused on the day-to-day tasks of the product lifecycle, from discovery to delivery. However, as I observed senior PMs and VPs, I realized that there was much more to their roles than what happened in the meetings I was invited to.

It became clear to me that the differentiator between a junior PM and a senior PM was not just the scope of the product they owned, but rather the new responsibilities and expectations that came with advancing in their career. Each stage of a Product Manager's career brings about a shift in the definition of being "great."

The first stage is all about shipping products. This is where the foundational work of the product lifecycle takes place. You go through the process of discovering user needs, defining product requirements, designing the product, developing it, delivering it to customers, and debriefing to learn from the experience.

However, there comes a point where simply getting better at product sense, analytical skills, and execution won't be enough to reach the senior PM level. The second stage is about identifying new opportunities and putting together a plan to win them. As a senior PM, it becomes your responsibility to think strategically and proactively seek out new avenues for growth. This requires a shift in mindset from being reactive to being proactive.

In the third stage of a Product Manager's career, the focus shifts to building a great team. It becomes your responsibility to hire talented individuals, coach and mentor them, and establish processes that enable your organization to create winning strategies and ship successful products at a larger scale than what a single PM can achieve.

Additionally, being a strategic advisor to the rest of the company becomes a crucial part of the role. As a senior PM, you need to be able to provide valuable insights and guidance to other teams and stakeholders. Your expertise and perspective are sought after to drive the overall success of the company.

To progress through these stages and be successful in your Product Manager career, it's important to be intentional. Here are three actionable pieces of advice:

  1. Continuously develop your strategic thinking skills. As you advance in your career, your ability to identify opportunities and create winning strategies becomes increasingly important. Seek out opportunities to expand your strategic mindset and learn from experienced leaders in your organization.

  2. Invest in building strong relationships. Building a great team and being a strategic advisor both heavily rely on strong relationships with others. Take the time to connect with colleagues, stakeholders, and potential hires. Cultivate a network of people who can support and collaborate with you.

  3. Embrace lifelong learning. The field of product management is constantly evolving, and it's crucial to stay updated with the latest trends, tools, and methodologies. Attend industry conferences, participate in webinars, and engage in continuous learning to stay ahead of the curve.

In conclusion, a Product Manager's career goes through three distinct stages: shipping products, identifying new opportunities, and building a great team. Each stage brings new responsibilities and expectations. To succeed and progress in your career, focus on developing your strategic thinking skills, building strong relationships, and embracing lifelong learning. By doing so, you'll be well-equipped to navigate the challenges and seize the opportunities that come your way.
