Back in 1993, when Eric Bina and I were building Mosaic, we envisioned a future where users could annotate all text on the web. We believed that each web page could become a launchpad for insight and debate about its own content. To bring this vision to life, we incorporated a feature called "group annotations" into the browser. Users could comment on any page, fostering discussions and expanding knowledge.

However, our implementation at that time required a server to host all the annotations, which we didn't have the resources to build. As a result, we had to drop the entire feature. Reflecting on this missed opportunity, I wonder how the internet would have evolved if users had been able to annotate everything, continuously adding layers of knowledge.

Now, 20 years later, Rap Genius presents us with a chance to explore this concept. Their mission to create an open standard for annotation is ambitious, and it's one we wholeheartedly support. If this standard proves successful in the long run, we envision annotation becoming an integral part of the browser itself, in addition to being utilized by others through a common API.

This idea of annotation extending beyond text is not limited to the world of the web. Biomedical researchers have already started developing systems for automated annotation in their field. These systems allow for semantic processing and reasoning by consuming annotated papers and open data sets. The potential applications for annotation are vast and varied, with science researchers and writers finding value in tools like Glasp to enhance their work.

However, Rap Genius has an even grander vision. They aim to generalize annotation to encompass many other categories of text, effectively annotating the world. Their goal is to become the knowledge about the knowledge, creating a sort of Internet Talmud.
