Embrace Your Inner Child: Why I Quit my 9 to 5

Life is short. This is something we hear all the time, but do we truly understand its significance? An average human only lives for about 30,000 days, which is a mere fraction of the current lifespan of the universe. When we consider the time we spend with our parents before college, as well as the time we spend sleeping, eating, and exercising, we are left with only 10,400 days. That's roughly 28 years. If you knew that you only had 28 years left to live, how would you choose to spend them?

For most of us, money is often seen as the ultimate goal. We believe that by sacrificing our time and pursuing financial success, we will find fulfillment. But the truth is, money can always be earned back, while time is a non-renewable resource. It's the one thing we can never get back once it's gone. I used to believe that success meant sacrificing my time, but I've come to realize that it doesn't align with who I truly am and what makes me feel fulfilled.

One of the biggest awakenings in my journey towards embracing my inner child came from a Ted talk by Scott Dinsmore titled "How to Find Work You Love." In his talk, Dinsmore asks a profound question: "Is this how you are going to spend the rest of your life? Have you tried your best to figure out who you are and why you exist?"

These questions struck a chord with me. They made me realize that life is too short to spend it working on someone else's dream. We can't wait for the perfect timing or the right opportunity to pursue what truly makes us happy. Our inner child holds the key to our authenticity and our deepest desires. It knows us better than anyone else.

I believe that one of the reasons we lose touch with our inner child is the education system. Sir Ken Robinson, in his famous talk "Do Schools Kill Creativity?" highlights how schools often stifle our creativity and limit our potential. The emphasis on conformity and standardized testing leaves little room for individuality and personal expression.

But why is creativity so important? Creativity is the driving force behind innovation and progress. It allows us to think outside the box, solve problems, and create meaningful and impactful work. When we suppress our creativity, we lose a part of ourselves and our ability to make a difference in the world.

So, how can we reconnect with our inner child and embrace our true selves? Here are three actionable pieces of advice:

  1. Reflect on your passions and interests: Take the time to explore what truly makes you come alive. What activities or hobbies bring you joy? What topics can you talk about for hours on end? By identifying your passions, you can start aligning your life with what truly matters to you.

  2. Take risks and embrace failure: Fear of failure often holds us back from pursuing our dreams. But failure is an integral part of growth and learning. Embrace the possibility of failure and see it as an opportunity to learn and improve. Take risks and step outside of your comfort zone, knowing that it is through these experiences that you will truly discover your potential.

  3. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals: Finding a supportive community that shares your values and aspirations can be incredibly empowering. Surround yourself with people who inspire you and encourage you to be your authentic self. By building a network of like-minded individuals, you create an environment that nurtures your inner child and supports your journey towards fulfillment.

In conclusion, life is too short to live someone else's dream. Embracing your inner child, reconnecting with your passions, and pursuing what truly makes you happy is the ultimate path to fulfillment. Don't wait for the perfect timing or the right opportunity. Start today, and make the most of the 10,400 precious days you have left. Remember, time is the most valuable asset we have, so use it wisely and authentically.
