The Power of Annotation and Community Building
An Open Letter to Marc Andreessen and Rap Genius : Hypothesis
In 1993, when Eric Bina and I were developing Mosaic, it was clear to us that users would want to annotate text on the web. We believed that each web page should be a platform for insight and debate about its content. We implemented a feature called "group annotations" in the browser, which allowed users to comment on any page and engage in discussions. However, our implementation required a server to host the annotations, and we didn't have the resources to build and scale that server. As a result, we had to drop the feature.
Looking back, I often wonder how the internet would have evolved if users had been able to annotate everything. The ability to add new layers of knowledge to existing knowledge, endlessly expanding our understanding, could have transformed the way we interact with the web. Now, 20 years later, Rap Genius presents us with an opportunity to explore this possibility.
Rap Genius has taken on the ambitious mission of creating an open standard for annotation. If successful, this could lead to the integration of annotation directly into the browser, where it truly belongs. This would allow users to annotate any text they come across on the web, enriching it with additional insights and information. The potential applications of this technology are vast. Biomedical researchers, for example, have been developing systems to automatically annotate new papers and open data sets, enabling semantic processing by reasoning systems. This is just the beginning.
But Rap Genius has an even grander vision. They aim to generalize annotation to many other categories of text, to annotate the world and become the knowledge about the knowledge. They aspire to create the "Internet Talmud," a platform where insights and discussions can flourish, shaping our understanding of various subjects.
Why We Created the Yelp Elite Squad
When Yelp first started, one question kept arising: "Why would I ever want to write a review?" Yelp needed to establish a foundation of real and authentic reviews from everyday people, without resorting to paid reviews. To achieve this, they had to build a strong Yelp community with a shared sense of identity and purpose.
Yelp's initial goal was to identify influential users in San Francisco, the tastemakers who would shape the platform's content. They organized events at new and unique spots in the city, inviting local influencers to share their opinions and experiences. These events not only fostered a sense of community but also allowed Yelpers to meet and connect in person. This personal connection was crucial in building a loyal and engaged user base.
Yelp understood that to create a thriving community, they had to make users feel like they were part of something bigger than themselves. They wanted to emphasize a sense of belonging and purpose that went beyond mere quantifiable metrics. By bringing humanity to Yelp, they were able to create a powerful force behind local content.
As Yelp evolved, it transformed into a lifestyle brand. They rejected the idea of mundane promotional items and instead focused on creating a sense of exclusivity and charm. By aligning their branding with the values and aspirations of their community, Yelp further solidified its position as a trusted platform for local recommendations.
The Power of Annotation and Community Building
Both the stories of Rap Genius and Yelp highlight the importance of community building and engagement. Rap Genius aims to create an open standard for annotation, allowing users to enrich text with their insights and knowledge. This vision aligns with the initial idea of Mosaic, where every web page could become a launchpad for discussions and debates.
Yelp, on the other hand, focused on building a community of passionate reviewers who shared their opinions and experiences. By fostering a sense of belonging and purpose, Yelp created a loyal user base that contributed valuable content to the platform.
These two stories intersect in their emphasis on the power of user-generated content and the potential for collective knowledge creation. Both Rap Genius and Yelp recognize the value of tapping into the wisdom and insights of the crowd. They understand that by empowering users to contribute their thoughts and experiences, they can create a richer and more vibrant platform.
