The Disconnect between Perceived and True Value in the Tech Industry

In the tech industry, there exists a phenomenon called "accomplishment arbitrage." This occurs when someone refers to an accomplishment that happened in the past, but the value of that accomplishment has changed since then. The key here is the disconnect between the perceived value of an accomplishment and its true value. Accomplishments in the tech world are not consistently changing in one direction, which makes it challenging to interpret their value based on their ease or difficulty of accomplishment at present.

On the other hand, when evaluating opportunities or companies from the supply side in a marketplace, it is crucial to consider certain aspects. Is the marketplace functioning well? Will the suppliers be able to work 40 hours a week and continue doing so in the future? When will the subsidies no longer be necessary? These questions are vital to understanding the true potential of a marketplace. As a result, I have been cautious about long-term prospects for solo food delivery businesses. Uber, for example, can leverage its existing supply side to increase revenue in the food delivery sector. However, pure food companies would need to secure an equal number of drivers but may not be able to compensate them in the same manner. This creates a significant disadvantage for them.

Many "Uber for X" companies, such as parking attendants, car wash services, and massage providers, often face the challenge of low demand with sporadic surges throughout the day. Ride-sharing services, on the other hand, have superior economics even with the same customer acquisition costs. The success of a marketplace ultimately depends on its unit economics. Therefore, it becomes essential to search for alternative pools of labor to ensure sustained growth.

In conclusion, the tech industry experiences a disconnect between the perceived and true value of accomplishments. This phenomenon of "accomplishment arbitrage" makes it challenging to gauge the worth of past achievements in the present. Additionally, evaluating marketplaces from the supply side is crucial, considering factors such as sustainability, supplier commitment, and the timeline for reducing subsidies. Finally, understanding unit economics and exploring different labor pools are vital for the success of marketplace businesses.

Actionable Advice:

  1. Stay updated on the changing landscape of the tech industry to accurately assess the value of past accomplishments.
  2. Conduct comprehensive evaluations of marketplaces, considering long-term sustainability and supplier commitment.
  3. Focus on optimizing unit economics to ensure the viability and profitability of your marketplace business.
