The Social Token Paradox and the Four Kinds of Luck in Entrepreneurship

In the world of web3, social tokens have gained significant attention as a means of tokenizing communities. However, there is a fundamental flaw in the current structure of social tokens that goes against the vision of an open Internet. The Social Token Paradox, as I like to call it, arises from the fact that tokenized communities are centered around what individuals have, such as social or financial capital, rather than what they do.

The problem with this approach is that it incentivizes exclusivity within these communities. To increase the price of the token, community organizers have two options: increase the token price or decrease the number of tokens available. Both choices limit access to the community and promote exclusivity, which contradicts the vision of a truly open Internet that web3 aims to achieve.

To overcome the Social Token Paradox, we need to shift the focus of tokenized communities from what individuals have to what they do. Instead of measuring status based on the amount of capital one possesses, we should consider the number of communities individuals are a part of and their online activities. The richness of one's online story and the extent of their involvement in various online ventures should be the new indicators of status in web3.

This concept aligns with the idea of luck in entrepreneurship, as discussed by Dr. James Austin in his book "Chase, Chance, and Creativity." Austin identifies four types of luck. Chance I refers to pure blind luck that occurs without any effort on our part. It is completely accidental and uncontrollable. Chance II, on the other hand, involves motion and action. By stirring things up and bringing in random ideas, we create an environment where chance can operate. This type of luck favors those who have a persistent curiosity and a willingness to experiment and explore.

Chance III goes beyond mere action; it requires a special receptivity and discernment to recognize and grasp the significance of opportunities. This type of luck is unique to individuals who possess the right combination of knowledge, observation skills, and the ability to form new associations quickly. Lastly, Chance IV is highly personalized and favors individuals with distinctive hobbies, lifestyles, and behaviors. It arises from their unique characteristics and actions.

In the context of web3 and tokenized communities, Chance II and Chance III are particularly relevant. The persistent curiosity and experimental nature of individuals can lead to the creation of new opportunities within these communities. Additionally, those who possess a solid background of knowledge and the ability to observe and form associations quickly are more likely to recognize the potential of these opportunities.

To navigate the Social Token Paradox and capitalize on the four types of luck in entrepreneurship, here are three actionable pieces of advice:

  1. Shift the focus from exclusivity to inclusivity: Instead of restricting access to tokenized communities, create an environment that encourages participation and collaboration. Emphasize the value of individuals' actions and contributions rather than their possessions.

  2. Foster curiosity and experimentation: Encourage community members to explore new ideas, experiment with different approaches, and continuously learn. Curiosity and a willingness to take risks are key factors in attracting chance opportunities.

  3. Cultivate knowledge and observation skills: Invest in building a strong foundation of knowledge and continuously improve observation skills. This will enable individuals to recognize and grasp the significance of opportunities within tokenized communities.

By incorporating these actions into the design and operation of social tokens and tokenized communities, we can overcome the Social Token Paradox and leverage the four types of luck to create a more inclusive and vibrant web3 ecosystem. In this new paradigm, capital will no longer be the primary status symbol. Instead, individuals will be valued for their active involvement in multiple communities and their rich online history. Let us embrace this shift and build a web3 that truly reflects the principles of openness and collaboration.
