"Creating Meaningful Reading Notes and Building Habit-Forming Behavior"
Introduction:
In our digital age, where information is abundant and easily accessible, capturing and organizing reading notes efficiently has become a crucial skill. This article explores two seemingly unrelated topics: de-automating reading notes and the Hook Model for manufacturing desire. Surprisingly, these concepts share common points and can be combined to enhance our reading experience and build habit-forming behavior.
De-Automating My Reading Notes:
When it comes to capturing reading notes, automation might seem like the ideal solution. However, I have learned that automation can create a sense of detachment and hinder our ability to absorb and curate the information effectively. To overcome this, I have developed a three-step process:
-
Read & Memo:
The first step is to read the book and mark it up along the way. This active engagement helps in better comprehension and retention of key points. To easily locate these marked passages later, I use Post-It Flags as bookmarks. -
Look back & Curate:
After finishing the book, instead of immediately creating notes in Obsidian or any note-taking tool, I take a step back and review the marked passages. This allows me to distinguish between valuable insights worth capturing as separate linked notes and those that can be noted in a source note or safely ignored. -
Organize:
Next, I create a source note in Obsidian, which acts as a map of content (MOC) for the book. Within my "Reading" folder, I have sub-folders for Sources and Commonplace. I capture passages as separate notes and link them to the source note using transcluded links, ensuring a comprehensive preview of the full note. This method ensures that my notes are well-organized and easily accessible.
The Hook Model:
The Hook Model, originally designed to understand user behavior and habit formation in products, can surprisingly be applied to our reading habits as well. By utilizing the four phases of the Hook Model - Trigger, Action, Reward, and Investment - we can manufacture desire and build meaningful reading habits:
-
Trigger:
In reading, triggers can be both external (such as setting a specific reading time or place) and internal (making reading part of our routine behavior). By establishing consistent triggers, we can cue ourselves to take action and form reading habits. -
Action:
Motivation and ability are the two pulleys of human behavior that companies leverage to encourage action. Similarly, as readers, we can enhance our reading habits by finding the right balance between motivation (choosing books aligned with our interests) and ability (setting realistic reading goals). -
Reward:
Variable schedules of reward have a significant impact on habit formation. By experiencing the pleasure of learning new information, gaining insights, or simply enjoying the process of reading, our brains release dopamine, reinforcing the habit. The anticipation of reward drives us to continue the habit. -
Investment:
To solidify our reading habits, we can create a sense of investment by committing time, effort, or even social capital. This can include sharing book recommendations with friends, actively participating in book clubs, or engaging in discussions surrounding the books we read. These investments improve the overall reading experience and strengthen our commitment to the habit.
Actionable Advice:
-
Embrace a mindful approach to reading:
By de-automating our reading notes and actively engaging with the content, we can improve comprehension and retention. Take the time to review and curate your notes, capturing valuable insights while filtering out irrelevant information. -
Incorporate triggers and rewards into your reading routine:
Set specific reading triggers (time, place, or activity) to cue yourself to read regularly. Additionally, identify the rewards you derive from reading (knowledge, personal growth, entertainment) and consciously acknowledge and appreciate them, reinforcing the habit. -
Invest in your reading experience:
Immerse yourself in the reading community by joining book clubs, attending literary events, or engaging in online discussions. By investing time and effort in these activities, you enhance your overall reading experience and create a sense of accountability and commitment to the habit.
Conclusion:
By combining the concepts of de-automating reading notes and the Hook Model, we can create a more meaningful and habit-forming reading experience. By actively engaging with the content, curating our notes, and incorporating triggers, rewards, and investments, we can enhance our reading habits and derive greater value from our reading journey. So, let's embrace mindful reading and embrace the power of habit to enrich our lives through books.
