What if the part of you that remembers your name, your childhood, and your personal history is not the part that makes you you?

These cases appear to point in opposite directions. Dementia seems to show a mind surviving the deterioration of its brain. Brain organoids seem to show brain activity appearing without an obvious mind. But together they expose a deeper mistake: we often treat the self as either a database of information or a pattern of neural activity. Neither description is sufficient.

The more illuminating possibility is this: a self is not primarily an archive of what has happened, nor merely a machine producing activity. It is a subject embodied in a stable way of responding to the world. Memory helps a subject understand its story. The brain enables its capacities. But neither memory nor brain activity, considered in isolation, fully explains the person who remembers, feels, acts, and relates.

The person who forgets is not an empty person

Our ordinary picture of identity is strongly autobiographical. We imagine that being yourself means possessing a continuous record: your childhood home, your first love, your professional history, your favorite songs, and the private events no one else can know. If the record disappears, it is tempting to say that the person has disappeared too.

But memory is not one thing. There is a crucial difference between declarative memory, which concerns knowing what, and procedural memory, which concerns knowing how. If we understand personality as a person’s typical ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving, they look different. They are not merely remnants. They are the continuing shape of a life.

A person can lose the story of who they are while retaining the manner in which they inhabit the world.

This distinction changes the ethics of care. Correcting a confused person may restore a fact while damaging a relationship. Telling someone repeatedly that their deceased parent has been gone for decades may be accurate, but accuracy can become a form of cruelty when it is used without regard for the person’s emotional situation. If the person cannot access the narrative needed to understand the correction, the correction does not reconnect them with reality. It only introduces fear, shame, or grief.

A more humane response attends to the capacities that remain. Warmth, humor, music, facial expression, rhythm, and touch can reach procedural and emotional systems that factual explanation cannot. The goal is not to preserve a perfect account of the past. It is to create a good present for the subject who is still there.

The brain is necessary, but is it the subject?

The question becomes more puzzling when we turn from dementia to laboratory grown brain tissue. Suppose researchers create an organoid, a small cluster of neural cells, and discover that its activity resembles patterns associated with consciousness in humans. Has consciousness appeared?

One answer says yes in principle. If consciousness is identical to certain neural mechanisms or activity patterns, then reproducing those mechanisms should reproduce consciousness. On this view, the material substrate does the important work. A sufficiently similar arrangement of cells should possess the same property, just as a sufficiently accurate computer simulation might run the same program.

Another answer makes a more fundamental distinction. Consciousness is not simply an event occurring in tissue. It is an experience belonging to someone. Pain is not merely a signal. But saying that the brain enables consciousness is not identical to saying that every organized neural process is itself a conscious subject.

A map can encode a city’s streets, but the map does not live in the city. These analogies are imperfect because brains are far more active and integrated than machines or maps. An organoid may display neural complexity without possessing the broader organization associated with a subject: a body, a history, a perspective, the capacity to act in an environment, and an integrated stake in what happens next. It may be part of a possible consciousness without being a conscious someone.

The moral problem, then, is not solved by asking whether the cells look active enough. We must ask what kind of entity exists. Is there an organized point of view? Is there a unified subject for whom anything matters? Is the tissue merely performing processes, or is there someone undergoing them?

That question also clarifies why consciousness cannot be reduced to a detached pattern. A pattern is always a pattern of something, and an experience is always an experience for someone. The difficult issue is not only how activity happens, but how a living system becomes a bearer of capacities, interests, and meanings.

From memory and matter to a three layer model of selfhood

The cases of dementia and organoids suggest that selfhood has at least three distinct layers. Confusing them produces both philosophical errors and practical harm.

The first layer is the archive. This includes autobiographical facts, names, dates, places, and explicit beliefs about oneself. The archive gives a person a narrative identity. It answers questions such as, “What happened to me?” and “Who are the people in my life?” It is valuable, but it is not the whole self.

The second layer is the repertoire. This is the accumulated knowing how of a person: habits of attention, emotional tendencies, practiced skills, gestures, social expectations, and characteristic responses. The repertoire is less like a library and more like a musician’s technique. It can guide action even when the performer cannot explain the theory behind it.

The third layer is the subject. This is the someone to whom the archive belongs, who expresses the repertoire, and for whom experience has significance. The subject is not simply another data structure. It is the embodied point of view that encounters the world, responds to others, and has something at stake.

These layers can come apart.

In dementia, the archive may deteriorate while much of the repertoire and subject remain. The person may lose the explicit recognition of a daughter while retaining an emotional orientation toward safety, affection, and trust. In a brain organoid, some mechanisms resembling parts of the repertoire may exist without sufficient evidence of a subject. Neural activity may be present, but the larger unity that would make it someone’s experience may be absent.

This model also explains why a person can feel strangely familiar to themselves after forgetting an important event. The archive has changed, but the repertoire remains. It also explains why perfect memory would not automatically produce a self. A recording device could store every event in a life without becoming the person whose life it records.

Identity is not the amount of information preserved. It is the continuity of a point of view expressed through patterns of response.

The model offers a useful test for technologies that claim to preserve or reproduce people. A digital copy of someone’s memories may recreate the archive. A system trained on their speech may imitate parts of the repertoire. But neither achievement alone establishes that the original subject has continued, or that a new subject has appeared.

The same caution applies in the other direction. A person with profound cognitive impairment may have little accessible archive, yet still possess a subjectivity that deserves protection and a repertoire that can still be met with kindness. The inability to explain a life is not proof that there is no one living it.

What this changes in everyday life

The most immediate application concerns how we respond to people whose capacities are changing. We tend to organize social respect around verbal explanation, factual accuracy, and visible competence. These are convenient measures because they are easy to assess. But they privilege the archive and neglect the repertoire and subject.

A better approach is to ask three questions in any interaction:

  1. What information can this person currently access? This helps us avoid demanding explanations that are unavailable.
  2. What forms of knowing how remain available? Music, movement, humor, touch, ritual, and familiar routines may provide meaningful access.
  3. What emotional reality is this person inhabiting right now? Their literal account may be confused, but their fear, delight, embarrassment, or trust may be perfectly real.

This approach is not sentimental. It is a more accurate account of cognition. Human beings do not live by propositions alone. We navigate through embodied expectations and emotional cues. Even people with intact memory often decide what a situation means by reading another person’s face before they consciously interpret the facts.

The framework also matters for the design of artificial systems and biological experiments. Instead of treating consciousness as a simple score on a complexity scale, researchers should distinguish neural performance from subjectivity. They should investigate integration, embodiment, agency, temporal continuity, affective valuation, and the presence of an organized perspective. None of these criteria is decisive by itself, but together they ask the right kind of question.

Most importantly, the framework teaches humility. We should not assume that a system is conscious merely because it produces impressive outputs. Nor should we assume that a person lacks inner life merely because they cannot produce familiar outputs. The first mistake risks creating suffering in machines or tissues. The second risks overlooking suffering in human beings.

It is a point of view that persists through changing capacities, expressed in how a being encounters others and is capable of being affected by what happens.

When we meet someone who has forgotten us, the question is not only, “Do they know who I am?” We should also ask, “What kind of world do they experience when I am here?” And when we build systems that resemble brains, the question is not only, “How much activity can they generate?” It is, “Is there anyone for whom that activity is a world?”
