It can make someone feel at one with other people, nature, or the cosmos because the mental partitions that normally support individuality become less dominant.

But that same boundary loss also reveals why such states can be disorienting. If every thought can connect to every other thought, the mind risks turning into an unfiltered torrent. Too much association can become confusion. Too much openness can become overwhelm.

A useful mental model here is to imagine the self as a house with many rooms. The doors between rooms should not be welded shut, because then the house becomes a prison. But if every wall disappears at once, there is no privacy, no structure, and no place to rest. A good house has doors, hallways, and locks. It also has windows. The goal is not maximal openness. It is governed permeability.

That principle applies whether you are designing forests, brains, companies, or even your daily routine.


The modern world keeps removing the walls

This is where the synthesis becomes especially relevant. Modern systems are increasingly optimized for speed, visibility, and connectivity. Information travels instantly. Markets react instantly. Social outrage spreads instantly. Apps are built to reduce friction. Many institutions interpret friction as inefficiency, when in fact friction is often what prevents propagation from becoming contagion.

Consider the attention economy. Recommendation engines connect users to content with extraordinary efficiency. The result is not merely more information. It is more cascading relevance. One click leads to another, one emotion amplifies another, and soon entire networks of belief or outrage behave like dry grass in wind.

Or consider work. Teams are told to collaborate more, sync more, message more, share more. But when every conversation is always open, focus evaporates. Without intentional compartmentalization, the organization becomes mentally flammable. One urgent issue ignites the whole day.

The same principle appears in personal life. People often seek deeper awareness, stronger relationships, and more authenticity. All of those are forms of increased connection. But without boundaries, even intimacy can become overload. The ability to separate is not the enemy of love or understanding. It is what makes sustainable connection possible.

The real danger in modern systems is not isolation. It is unbounded coupling.


A practical framework: three questions for every system

If connection is a multiplier, then the important task is not to ask whether a system should be connected, but how. A simple framework can help.

1. What is being connected?

Not all inputs are equal. Invasive grasses connect dry fuel. Psilocybin connects brain regions that usually communicate less freely. In your own life, are you connecting useful signals, or are you connecting noise to more noise?

Ask: does this connection increase insight, resilience, or adaptation, or does it increase only speed and spread?

The goal is not maximal integration. It is optimal integration. A forest with no connectivity cannot function. A brain with no integration cannot think. But each has a threshold beyond which more connection becomes destabilizing.

Ask: where is the point at which additional connection stops adding value and starts creating runaway effects?
