A timeline can show when a revolution happened, but not why its participants believed the future had opened. A category can sort birds by species, but it cannot explain what happens when a bird uses an invisible field to navigate thousands of miles. Every map reveals something by hiding something else.

This is true of both science and spirituality. We often assume that an explanation merely reports reality. In practice, an explanation also organizes reality. It selects what counts as relevant, possible, measurable, and even real.

The deeper problem is not that we have too few frameworks. It is that we frequently mistake a useful framework for the whole structure of existence. The result is a peculiar kind of intellectual blindness: we can become so skilled at arranging what we know that we lose the ability to recognize what does not fit the arrangement.

Every Explanation Is an Arrangement

Richard Saul Wurman’s L.A.T.C.H. system offers five basic ways to organize information: Location, Alphabetical order, Time, Category, and Hierarchy. The power of the system is not that it produces one perfect structure. Its power is that it reminds us that information has no single natural arrangement.

Imagine a collection of facts about a city. You might arrange them by location, placing hospitals, schools, and parks on a map. You might arrange them alphabetically, making a directory. You might arrange them chronologically, telling the story of the city’s growth. You might divide them into categories, such as transport, housing, commerce, and culture. Or you might rank them by hierarchy, from the largest institution to the smallest neighborhood association.

Each arrangement is useful. None is neutral.

A map makes distance and connection visible. A timeline makes sequence and consequence visible. A category system makes resemblance visible. A hierarchy makes relative importance visible. But each system also creates omissions. A map may conceal history. A timeline may flatten geography. A hierarchy may imply that what is larger is more important. A category may make a living process appear static.

This matters far beyond infographic design. It applies to how we organize experience itself.

Science often organizes phenomena according to repeatable regularities. That arrangement has extraordinary power. It lets us predict eclipses, design vaccines, send spacecraft, and distinguish genuine patterns from coincidence. Yet the success of this method can tempt us to make a larger claim: if something cannot be located within our current system of regularities, then it must not be real.

That conclusion does not follow. It may simply mean that we have encountered a phenomenon whose proper arrangement is not yet available to us.

A framework does not merely describe the world. It decides which features of the world become visible.

The practical lesson is not to reject frameworks. It is to become conscious of them. The mature thinker asks not only, “Is this explanation correct?” but also, “What does this explanation allow me to see, and what does it force me to ignore?”

The Strange Fate of the Supernatural

Consider the modern tendency to explain miracles through advanced physics. Quantum mechanics is mysterious enough to serve as a bridge between the ordinary and the astonishing. Entanglement, probability, nonlocal correlations, and the role of observation can sound like scientific versions of ancient wonder.

There is nothing wrong with investigating whether physical processes play a role in phenomena we do not yet understand. The danger comes when the explanation quietly changes the meaning of the event.

If a miracle is said to occur because a divine agent has learned to manipulate quantum mechanics more effectively than human beings, the supernatural has been relocated inside the existing natural order. The event may still be remarkable, but it is no longer supernatural in the strongest sense. It becomes an unusual technique, a higher level of competence within the same system.

This is a subtle but important transformation. The question is no longer whether another order of reality has intersected ours. The question becomes whether a sufficiently advanced operator has discovered a hidden feature of our own order.

The distinction resembles the difference between a magician who knows a secret mechanism and a person who brings a new kind of object into existence. In the first case, the rules were always there and the outcome was merely concealed. In the second, the rules themselves are not sufficient to explain what has occurred.

The resurrection, understood as a theological claim, is not simply an exceptionally efficient use of biological or physical processes. It is a claim that a new order of creation entered the old one. Death was not merely delayed, and a corpse was not merely repaired. The boundary that appeared final was breached.

Whether one accepts that claim or not, its conceptual structure is easy to miss if every anomaly is forced into the category of hidden natural mechanism. The event is not being presented as a puzzle within the old world. It is being presented as evidence that the old world is not the only order of reality.

This is where the L.A.T.C.H. idea becomes unexpectedly relevant. We can arrange a phenomenon by its physical location, its sequence in time, its category, or its place in a hierarchy of causes. But an event that represents the arrival of a new order may not be adequately described by any arrangement that assumes the old order is exhaustive.

A new creation cannot be fully understood as one more item in an old inventory.

When Classification Becomes a Cage

Classification is one of the first tools of intelligence. A child learns the world by separating edible from dangerous, familiar from strange, animal from object. Institutions depend on classification too. A hospital sorts symptoms, a library sorts books, and a legal system sorts actions into offenses, contracts, and rights.

But classification has a hidden cost. Once a category becomes familiar, it begins to feel like a natural boundary rather than a human choice. We forget that the categories were constructed for a purpose.

Take the category “dead.” In ordinary biological experience, it is an extraordinarily reliable category. It helps us distinguish an organism that has ceased functioning from one that remains alive. But if a resurrection occurs, the event does not merely add a rare example to the category “alive.” It exposes the possibility that our categories were designed for a world in which death had the final word.

The same pattern appears in less dramatic forms. A child who is labeled “poor at mathematics” may actually be poor at timed tests, classroom anxiety, or symbolic notation. An employee labeled “unmotivated” may be responding to an incoherent incentive system. A community labeled “resistant to change” may be protecting a form of knowledge that the proposed change cannot measure.

In each case, the category may be useful and still insufficient.

A category is best understood as a tool for attention, not a verdict on reality. It tells us where to look, but it should not tell us that nothing exists outside its boundaries. The trouble begins when the map starts policing the territory.

This provides a general test for extraordinary claims. Instead of asking immediately whether an unusual event can be squeezed into an existing category, ask four questions:

  1. What does the current category explain well?
  2. What evidence does it repeatedly leave unresolved?
  3. What would become visible if the event were placed in a different category?
  4. Is the new category genuinely explanatory, or is it merely a more elaborate name for the same mystery?

The fourth question protects us from empty language. Calling something “quantum” does not explain it. Calling something “spiritual” does not explain it either. A label becomes an explanation only when it changes what we can understand, predict, or responsibly do.

The Five Lenses for Difficult Questions

L.A.T.C.H. can be turned into a practical method for thinking about any question that feels confusing, controversial, or unusually important. The goal is not to force every problem into five boxes. The goal is to inspect how different arrangements alter the conclusion.

Location: Where does the phenomenon occur?

Location includes more than physical place. It can mean the level at which something appears: molecules, organisms, minds, communities, or institutions. A question about consciousness may look impossible if examined only at the level of individual neurons, yet become more intelligible when viewed at the level of an embodied organism embedded in a social world.

Likewise, a spiritual claim may be distorted if treated only as a claim about physical location. A kingdom of God is not simply another planet in the same universe. Its “location” may be relational, moral, or eschatological, a new order intersecting the present one.

Alphabetical order: What happens when there is no strong causal structure yet?

Alphabetical order is useful when we need access without pretending to understand. A glossary can be more honest than a theory. When confronted with a collection of anomalous experiences, we may first need a careful inventory rather than a premature explanation.

This is a defense against both credulity and dismissal. Record what happened, under what conditions, and with what uncertainty. Do not let the desire for a grand theory erase the particulars.

Time: What changes when sequence becomes visible?

Some events cannot be understood as isolated points. A person’s decision may make sense only after years of formation. A scientific discovery may look sudden while depending on decades of accumulated work. A religious claim about resurrection also has a temporal structure: creation, death, renewal, and the promised transformation of all things.

Time reveals whether an event is an exception, a transition, or the beginning of a pattern. The first spark in a forest fire is not just a tiny fire. It is a change in the kind of process taking place.

Category: What family of things are we assuming this belongs to?

This is often the most consequential lens. If a phenomenon is categorized as a malfunction, we search for a defect. If it is categorized as a message, we search for meaning. If it is categorized as a miracle, we ask whether a different order of reality has become present.

The category directs the investigation before the investigation begins.

Hierarchy: What is primary, and what is derivative?

Hierarchy asks whether physical laws are the highest level of explanation, or whether they are descriptions of regularities within a larger reality. It also asks whether measurable outcomes exhaust meaning, or whether meaning can shape the way outcomes matter.

A hierarchy is not automatically oppressive or mistaken. It is simply powerful. Once we place one form of knowledge above all others, however, every lower level must translate itself into the language of the highest. Moral value becomes preference. Consciousness becomes computation. Hope becomes chemistry. Miracle becomes technical sophistication.

Sometimes those translations clarify. Sometimes they reduce.

A Better Discipline for Wonder

The alternative to naive belief is not reflexive disbelief. It is disciplined openness: the willingness to test claims rigorously while remaining aware that rigor does not require one particular ontology.

This discipline has three stages.

First, identify the frame. Are you treating the question as a problem of mechanism, meaning, history, identity, or transformation? Many arguments persist because participants are answering different kinds of questions while using the same words.

Second, test the frame against its leftovers. What does it explain, and what does it repeatedly push aside as irrelevant, subjective, impossible, or accidental? A theory should be judged partly by the quality of the residue it produces.

Third, compare alternative arrangements. Do not ask only which explanation is most familiar. Ask which one makes the greatest number of important features intelligible with the fewest distortions.

This is not an invitation to accept every supernatural claim or to treat scientific laws as optional. It is an invitation to distinguish methodological limits from metaphysical conclusions. Science may study regularities by bracketing questions of ultimate meaning. That is a productive method. But the success of the method does not prove that reality contains nothing beyond what the method was designed to measure.

The same caution applies in reverse. A spiritual interpretation should not use mystery as an excuse to avoid evidence, precision, or accountability. Wonder is not a substitute for thought. It is a reason to think more carefully about what our current categories can and cannot contain.

That question applies to science, theology, education, design, and ordinary life. The world may not be less orderly than we think. It may be ordered in more than one way. And the first sign of a larger reality is often not that our maps become useless, but that we finally notice where their borders are.
