A scientific equation is not a photograph of nature, but it can predict what nature will do.
The crucial error is to ask every form of knowledge to look like sensory perception. If a person cannot visualize a face, we may wrongly assume that person cannot remember it. If a particle cannot be seen directly, we may wrongly assume it is merely a fiction. If a spiritual truth cannot be demonstrated like a chemical reaction, we may wrongly assume it has no meaning or consequence.
A better question is: What kind of access does this claim offer, and what tests belong to that kind of access?
For a scientific model, the test may be predictive accuracy. For a drawing, it may be whether the image clarifies an experience or opens a new possibility. For a moral conviction, it may be whether it withstands reflection and produces a more coherent, humane way of living. These standards should not be mixed indiscriminately, but neither should one standard colonize every domain.
Why externalizing thought changes what we can know
Once we understand representation as a tool rather than a passive mirror, a practical consequence follows: we should stop waiting for clarity to arrive entirely inside the mind.
The student who cannot hold a complex argument in working memory can draw a diagram. The novelist who cannot visualize a scene can write sensory details and discover the setting through sentences. The engineer can build a rough prototype. The scientist can create an instrument that makes a hidden pattern legible. The person seeking spiritual clarity can adopt a repeated practice, not as a mechanical guarantee, but as a way of bringing an otherwise vague commitment into daily form.
Externalization works because it creates a stable object for attention. Internal thought is fluid and easily distorted by fatigue, emotion, and limited memory. A sketch, equation, journal entry, or ritual gives thought somewhere to land. Once outside us, an idea can be inspected, revised, contradicted, and shared.
This also explains why art is epistemic, not merely decorative. A portrait can reveal a relationship that the artist could not have stated in a proposition. A poem can distinguish grief from loneliness by giving each a different rhythm and texture. A diagram can expose a contradiction that remained invisible in a paragraph. Art does not always provide information in the narrow sense. It can provide a new arrangement of attention.
The same is true of scientific instruments. A microscope does not merely magnify what the unaided eye already knows. It reorganizes the field of possible experience. It allows a structure to become observable through a designed mediation. Instruments, artworks, languages, and spiritual practices all extend human perception, though they do so according to different purposes and standards.
This perspective is especially valuable in a culture that prizes quick visual comprehension. Infographics, images, and demonstrations are powerful, but they are not universally superior. Some people think best in words. Others use movement, sound, number, or relational structure. Accessibility is not simply a matter of adding captions to a visual world. It also means recognizing that different minds may need different routes to the same object of understanding.

A mind without pictures can still imagine. A world beyond direct observation can still be known. And sometimes the first step toward seeing more clearly is discovering that seeing was never the only way to know.
