This is not only a matter for students. It applies to managers, researchers, designers, therapists, and anyone whose work now includes machine assistance. The future will not belong to the people who use AI most, but to those who can stay meaningfully present while using it.


Presence is a skill, and it can be trained

The encouraging part of all this is that neither dissociation nor overdependence is destiny. Both can be changed by practice. Healing is not a single revelation but a repeated return to regulated contact. Learning in the age of AI is likely to require the same discipline.

The body-based practices used for reconnecting after trauma offer a surprising blueprint for cognitive life. Deep breathing is not just relaxation. It is a way of telling the system that it can remain open without panicking. Mindful walking is not just a wellness habit. It is a rehearsal in noticing without fleeing. Journaling is not just reflection. It is an act of re-association, where diffuse experience becomes language, and language becomes orientation.

Try applying that same logic to work with AI:

  2. Notice where you get stuck.
  3. Use AI only as a regulated support, not a replacement for the encounter.

A classroom policy for AI is really a policy about what kind of minds we want to cultivate. Do we want minds that are optimized for rapid output, or minds that can tolerate ambiguity, build inner coherence, and stay connected under pressure? The answer should not be sentimental. It should be structural.

The same is true outside the classroom. A person who never practices being with their own sensations may become skilled at functioning while disconnected. A person who never practices struggling through an idea may become excellent at producing text while remaining strangely uninvolved in thought. In both cases, the cost is subtle at first, then cumulative.

That is why practices that seem small matter so much. A morning ritual of gratitude, checking in with an inner child, or asking what the future self needs today is not merely emotional housekeeping. It is a way of stating, before the day begins, that one intends to remain in relationship with oneself. The point is not productivity. The point is continuity of self.

And continuity of self is what both trauma recovery and meaningful learning are trying to restore.
