It even exposes whether leadership can distinguish genuine growth from mere busyness.

This is why the most successful service lines often behave like organizational stress tests. They compress every weakness into a measurable outcome. If intake is clumsy, no amount of clinical excellence will fully compensate. If the patient journey is confusing, volume may rise while satisfaction falls. If data is fragmented, leaders may know that demand is strong without knowing why capacity feels perpetually tight.

The danger is assuming that more volume automatically means more success. Sometimes it does. But sometimes rising volume is simply a magnifying glass that reveals a system operating with too little coherence. The same procedure count can mean very different things depending on whether the organization is instrumented to learn from it.
