Structured Learning: A Path to Growth and Discovery

In the pursuit of personal and professional growth, learning plays a vital role. However, the approach to learning can vary greatly, with some opting for structured learning while others prefer a more unstructured approach. The difference between the two lies in intentionality - structured learning is guided by predefined objectives, while unstructured learning occurs more naturally without explicit direction.

For those in a job seeking to improve and upskill, the lack of structure can be a challenge. Unlike in school, where the learning path is clearly defined, the post-school learning journey requires self-direction and motivation. This is where structured learning comes into play. It provides a framework to follow, ensuring that the learning process is purposeful and effective.

When it comes to structured learning, I approach it in three distinct phases: discovery, sense-making, and experimentation. The first phase involves actively seeking out new ideas and knowledge. This can be done through various means such as reading books, attending workshops, or even engaging in online courses. The key is to explore different topics and expose oneself to a wide range of perspectives.

Once the discovery phase is complete, it's time to make sense of the newfound knowledge. This involves reflecting on what has been learned, connecting the dots, and synthesizing ideas. Sense-making allows for a deeper understanding of the subject matter and helps to build a solid foundation for further learning.

The final phase of structured learning is experimentation. This is where the newfound knowledge is put into practice and tested in real-world scenarios. Experimentation allows for hands-on experience and enables individuals to apply their learnings in a practical and meaningful way. It is through experimentation that true growth and mastery are achieved.

While structured learning provides a clear path for growth, it is important to note that it is not the only way to learn effectively. Sometimes, the best ideas and insights come when we least expect them. In fact, seemingly mindless activities can often lead to moments of deep thinking and creativity.

Take, for example, the phenomenon of "shower thoughts." Many of us have experienced moments of clarity and inspiration while taking a shower. This seemingly mundane task allows our minds to wander and roam beyond the activity at hand. It creates a space for our subconscious thoughts to surface and for unexpected insights to emerge.

Research has shown that the rational mind, when focused on a problem, can consume a significant amount of mental bandwidth. By engaging in a "mindless" task like showering, we give our subconscious mind the opportunity to process information and make connections that may have eluded us during deliberate thought.

The concept of "flow" also comes into play when considering the benefits of mindless activities. Flow is a state of deep concentration and immersion in an activity, where time seems to fly by and one's sense of self fades away. Mindless activities can often induce a state of flow, allowing for optimal creativity and problem-solving.

In fact, some of history's greatest thinkers and creators have recognized the value of mindless activities for generating ideas. Friedrich Nietzsche, the renowned philosopher, would often take long walks to stimulate his thinking. He famously wrote, "All truly great thoughts are conceived while walking." Walking, like showering, provided him with a space for his subconscious mind to flourish and for innovative ideas to take shape.

Incorporating mindless activities into our daily routines can be a powerful tool for unlocking our creativity and problem-solving abilities. Whether it's taking a leisurely walk, engaging in a hobby, or simply allowing ourselves to daydream, these moments of respite can lead to breakthroughs and "aha" moments.

To make the most of structured learning and mindless activities, it is essential to adopt a balanced approach. Here are three actionable pieces of advice to incorporate into your learning journey:

  1. Embrace structured learning as a foundation: Structured learning provides a clear roadmap for growth and ensures that you are actively working towards your goals. Use it as a foundation to build upon and complement it with other forms of learning.

  2. Make time for mindless activities: Schedule regular moments of respite and engage in mindless activities that allow your subconscious mind to thrive. These moments can spark unexpected insights and fuel your creativity.

  3. Share your learnings and progress: Intentionally sharing your learnings and progress in public spaces can be a powerful motivator. Whether it's through a blog, social media, or a dedicated platform, sharing what you've learned not only helps solidify your knowledge but also inspires others in their own learning journeys.

In conclusion, structured learning and mindless activities are two sides of the same coin. While structured learning provides a clear path for growth and discovery, mindless activities create the space for unexpected insights and moments of creativity. By incorporating both into our learning journeys, we can unlock our full potential and continue to evolve and thrive in the ever-changing world around us.
