Service Design: A Product Management Perspective – Matthijs Kouw

In the world of software development, understanding user stories and their acceptance criteria is crucial for Quality Assurance (QA) professionals. It is important to delve deep into these aspects to ensure a successful testing process. While user stories provide the context and purpose of a feature or functionality, acceptance criteria outline the specific conditions that must be met for the user story to be considered complete.

The significance of understanding acceptance criteria cannot be overstated. Incomplete or vague requirements can be addressed in future sprints, but missing acceptance criteria can prevent the release of the user story altogether. Let's take a closer look at an example of acceptance criteria for a "Download Historical Statement" feature:

  1. Considering that I am on the Download Historical Statement Page, I should select the period for which I want to download the statement.
  2. Considering that I am on the Download Historical Statement Page, I should select the account for which I want to download the statement.
  3. Considering that I am on the Download Historical Statement Page, I should not be allowed to download the statement for a future 'To' date.
  4. Considering that I am on the Download Historical Statement Page, I should not be allowed to select a 'From' date 10 years beyond in the past.
  5. Considering that I download my statement, I should be able to view the downloaded file.
  6. Considering that I am on the Download Historical Statement Page, I should be able to download my statement in doc, excel, and pdf formats.

Upon analyzing these acceptance criteria, we can identify three important points that are missing:

  1. Name and format of the downloaded file.
  2. Information (column names) to be displayed in the downloaded file.
  3. Options to select the type of transactions (debits, credits, or both) for the downloaded statement.

These missing details highlight the importance of having a comprehensive understanding of the product, its design, and structure. QA professionals need to familiarize themselves with the inter-operability of different modules and thoroughly study user stories, even if they are concise. Making notes and discussing ideas with Business Analysts (BA) and developers can simplify the process and ensure clarity.

Achieving a deep understanding of user stories and acceptance criteria requires significant time and effort. There are no specific tools or courses available in the market to accomplish this task for you. It is a combination of logical thinking, experience, and knowledge about the product. Actively participating in pre-plan meetings, engaging in discussions with BAs, and conducting self-study are effective ways to enhance your understanding. The more effort you invest, the more you will learn and grow in your role as a QA professional.

In conclusion, grasping user stories and their acceptance criteria is vital for QA professionals in the software development process. By thoroughly understanding these aspects, QA professionals can identify missing details, collaborate effectively with stakeholders, and contribute to the overall success of the product. Remember to make notes, engage in discussions, and invest time in studying user stories to enhance your skills and knowledge.
