When examining the risk factors associated with SMA, demographic factors such as age and gender have been found to play a role. Young individuals are more likely to develop addictive behaviors related to social media compared to older individuals (Abbasi, 2019). Additionally, women tend to indulge in social media more frequently than men, often using it as a means to enhance their social connections (Andreassen et al., 2017). Impulsivity, a personality trait that influences the occurrence and development of addiction, has also been linked to SMA. Trait impulsivity has been identified as a marker for vulnerability to SMA (Sindermann et al., 2020).

The underlying mechanisms of addiction can be understood through the interplay between the reflective and impulsive systems in the brain. The reflective system, primarily located in the prefrontal cortex, is responsible for executive functions such as short-term memory, planning, attention, and resisting immediate rewards for long-term gains. On the other hand, the impulsive system, found in subcortical brain areas, is involved in pleasure and addictive behaviors, responding to quickly acquired cues regardless of long-term negative consequences. An imbalance between these systems can contribute to addictive behaviors (Droutman et al., 2019).

Furthermore, self-esteem has been found to impact the predisposition to SMA. There is a negative association between the frequency of Facebook use, the meaning attributed to Facebook use, and users' levels of self-esteem. Individuals with low self-esteem may prefer the virtual world of social media, where they can behave anonymously and escape face-to-face communication. In light of these findings, it is essential to strike a balance in the use of iodine and social media. For wound care, iodine remains a valuable antiseptic agent, particularly in chronic and burn wounds. Healthcare professionals can confidently utilize iodine without concerns of adverse effects or delayed healing. However, it is crucial to consider individual factors such as age, gender, and impulsivity when addressing the risk of SMA. Education and awareness programs should focus on promoting responsible social media use and addressing underlying psychological factors such as self-esteem.

To prevent the harmful effects of excessive social media use, here are three actionable pieces of advice:
