The Connection Between Sleep, Physical Activity, and Dementia
Dementia is a devastating condition that affects many people, and insomnia is a common symptom that can lead to even more distress. In fact, insomnia affects 20-35% of patients with dementia and can lead to early institutionalization. While medications have been used to help with sleep, their safety and efficacy in patients with dementia are not well-established. Melatonin may be helpful in promoting sleep in some patients, but other factors, such as the patient’s medication list, should also be reviewed to optimize the sleep-wake cycle.
In addition to addressing insomnia, it is also important to consider the relationship between sleep, physical activity, and sedentary behavior with dementia risk. While findings have been inconsistent, a combination of seven-hour/day sleep, moderate-to-high LTPA (leisure-time physical activity), and low-to-moderate sedentary behavior showed the lowest dementia risk compared to other groups. Interestingly, each behavior was non-linearly associated with brain structures in a pattern similar to its association with dementia, suggesting they may affect dementia risk by affecting brain structures.
These findings highlight the potential to change daily behaviors to reduce the risk of dementia. For example, increasing physical activity and reducing sedentary behavior may be beneficial, as well as getting seven hours of sleep per night. However, it is important to note that these behaviors should be changed individually and simultaneously to have the greatest impact on dementia risk.
Overall, addressing insomnia and promoting healthy daily behaviors can help reduce the risk of dementia in patients with dementia and those at risk. While more research is needed to fully understand the relationship between sleep, physical activity, and sedentary behavior with dementia risk, these findings provide important insights into potential interventions that can be implemented to improve brain health.
