"The Changing Landscape: From Skin Tanning Attitudes to the Climate Economy Explosion"

In the early 20th century, there was a noticeable shift in attitudes towards skin tanning. A study found that articles and advertisements promoting the fashionable aspects of tanned skin increased in number in 1928 and 1929 compared to previous years. This indicates a significant change in societal preferences during this period. Historical reviews suggest that tanning first became popular in the 1920s or 1930s, and starting in 1928, the promotion of tanning saw a dramatic increase. The magazines Vogue and Harper's Bazaar published a total of 3 protanning articles and 2 protanning advertisements in the May, June, and July issues of 1920 and 1927. However, in the same months of 1928 and 1929, there were 30 articles and 99 advertisements promoting tanned skin (Figures 1 and 2). At the same time, there was a decline in articles and advertisements promoting bleached or lightened skin. In 1920 and 1927, the magazines published 6 articles on skin bleaching, but only 1 during 1928 and 1929. The number of advertisements promoting bleached skin also decreased from 44 to 22 during the same period.

What caused this shift in attitudes towards tanned skin? One possible explanation is the influence of fashion trends. In 1929, sportswear and swimsuit companies started advertising clothes that allowed for an active lifestyle and exposed skin to the sun for tanning. This change in fashion preferences may have contributed to the growing popularity of tanned skin. People began associating tanned skin with a healthy, active lifestyle, which became desirable.

Fast forward to the present day, and we are witnessing another significant shift, but this time in the realm of the climate economy. The passing of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) has the potential to shape the direction of the American economy in the next decade and beyond. This act includes provisions that incentivize electric vehicles and zero-carbon electricity through uncapped tax credits. The total spending under the IRA is projected to be more than $800 billion, double what the Congressional Budget Office estimates. The act also has the potential to make the United States a leader in low-cost clean electricity and hydrogen production, infrastructure, geologic storage, and human capital by 2029.

This shift towards a cleaner and more sustainable economy presents various opportunities for individuals and corporations alike. The IRA changes the narrative from risk mitigation to opportunity capture for big corporations. It provides a chance for them to be at the forefront of the transition towards clean energy. Furthermore, the number of Americans working in climate-relevant industries is expected to explode, creating new job opportunities and driving economic growth.

So, what can individuals do to capitalize on this changing landscape? Here are three actionable pieces of advice:

  1. Educate Yourself: Stay informed about the latest developments in the climate economy. Understand the incentives and opportunities presented by the IRA and other related policies. This knowledge will help you make informed decisions about career paths and investment opportunities.

  2. Embrace Innovation: Look for ways to contribute to the clean energy sector. Whether it's starting a new business, developing new technologies, or supporting existing ventures, embracing innovation will position you well in the evolving climate economy.

  3. Advocate for Change: Use your voice to support policies and initiatives that promote sustainability and combat climate change. Engage with local and national policymakers, participate in grassroots movements, and raise awareness within your community. Together, we can drive the necessary changes for a greener future.

In conclusion, the early 20th century witnessed a shift in attitudes towards skin tanning, and now we are experiencing a significant transformation in the climate economy. Both of these changes demonstrate the power of societal shifts and the influence of fashion, trends, and policies. By understanding these shifts and taking proactive steps, individuals can position themselves for success in the evolving climate economy. The fight against climate change presents us with an opportunity to shape the greatest story of our lives, and it is up to us to seize it.
