According to a survey, nearly one-quarter of C-suite executives reported using gen AI tools for work. Additionally, a quarter of respondents from companies using AI stated that gen AI is already on their boards' agendas. The use of gen AI is still in its early stages when it comes to managing associated risks. Surprisingly, less than half of the respondents claimed their organizations are mitigating the risk of inaccuracy, which is considered the most relevant risk.

Despite these challenges, experimentation with gen AI tools is becoming increasingly common, and organizations anticipate that these new capabilities will transform their industries. In fact, 79 percent of respondents have had exposure to gen AI, either at work or outside of work, and 22 percent regularly use it in their own work. The most common business functions utilizing gen AI tools are marketing and sales, product and service development, and service operations such as customer care and back-office support.

The Impact of Gen AI on Industries:

Expectations for gen AI's impact are high. Around three-quarters of respondents believe that gen AI will cause significant or disruptive change in their industry's competition within the next three years. Industries heavily relying on knowledge work are likely to experience more disruption and potentially reap more value. This is due to gen AI's strengths in language-based activities rather than physical labor.

On the other hand, manufacturing-based industries such as aerospace, automotive, and advanced electronics might experience fewer disruptive effects. However, despite the potential benefits, few companies seem fully prepared for the widespread use of gen AI or the business risks associated with these tools. Inaccuracy remains a significant concern, even more so than cybersecurity and regulatory compliance.

Reskilling and Workforce Transformation:

Looking ahead, respondents predict that the adoption of AI, including gen AI, will reshape many roles in the workforce. While there may be workforce cuts in certain areas, there will also be a need for large-scale reskilling efforts to address shifting talent needs. Almost 40 percent of respondents expect more than 20 percent of their companies' workforces to be reskilled, while only 8 percent anticipate a decrease in workforce size by over 20 percent.

The implementation of gen AI is not just about automation and job displacement. It presents an opportunity for employees to acquire new skills and adapt to the changing landscape. Reskilling and upskilling will be crucial to ensure that organizations can effectively leverage the potential of gen AI while retaining their valuable workforce.

Implementing Generative AI with Speed and Safety:

Gen AI offers significant opportunities for companies, with the potential for transformative impact across innovation, growth, and productivity. It has the ability to generate credible software code, text, speech, high-fidelity images, interactive videos, and even identify new materials and molecular models for medical advancements.

However, the implementation of gen AI comes with significant risks, and organizations need to be prepared to handle them responsibly. Despite recognizing the importance of gen AI, 91 percent of respondents feel unprepared to implement it in a responsible manner. To address these risks, enterprises should consider the following steps:

  1. Launch a sprint to understand the risk of inbound exposures related to gen AI: Organizations must thoroughly assess the potential risks associated with gen AI and develop a comprehensive understanding of their materiality across different domains and use cases.

  2. Develop a comprehensive risk management plan: This plan should include both technical and non-technical measures to manage the risks associated with gen AI. It is essential to have a range of options available to address any potential issues that may arise.

  3. Establish a governance structure: A well-defined governance structure is crucial for managing gen AI effectively. It should strike a balance between expertise and oversight, enabling rapid decision-making while adapting to evolving circumstances. This structure should be embedded in the organization's operating model and include appropriate training for end-users.
