Although gen AI is still in its early stages of development, organizations are beginning to recognize the need to manage the risks associated with this technology. Surprisingly, less than half of the respondents claimed that their organizations are actively mitigating the risk they consider most relevant: inaccuracy. This highlights the need for companies to prioritize risk management in the context of gen AI.

Despite the potential risks, organizations are eager to explore the capabilities of gen AI. Many respondents reported that experimentation with these tools is already relatively common within their companies. They firmly believe that the new capabilities offered by gen AI have the power to transform their industries. In fact, 79% of all respondents have had some exposure to gen AI, either through work or outside of it, and 22% regularly utilize it in their own professional endeavors.

The most common business functions that have adopted gen AI align with the overall utilization of AI: marketing and sales, product and service development, and service operations such as customer care and back-office support. These functions have recognized the potential of gen AI to enhance their processes and improve efficiency.

The expectations for gen AI's impact on industries are high, with three-quarters of respondents anticipating significant or disruptive changes within the next three years. Industries that heavily rely on knowledge-based work are likely to experience more disruption and potentially reap more value from gen AI. This is primarily due to the strengths of gen AI in language-based activities, as opposed to those requiring physical labor.

Interestingly, manufacturing-based industries, such as aerospace, automotive, and advanced electronics, may experience less disruptive effects from gen AI. This is a departure from previous technology waves that predominantly affected the manufacturing sector. The language-based capabilities of gen AI make it better suited for industries that heavily rely on knowledge work.

Despite the high expectations for gen AI, it is concerning that few companies appear fully prepared for its widespread use and the potential risks it may bring. Respondents frequently cited inaccuracy as a significant concern, even more so than cybersecurity and regulatory compliance. This emphasizes the need for organizations to prioritize accuracy and invest in measures that ensure the reliability of gen AI systems.

Respondents from AI high performers are twice as likely as others to state that their organizations' top objective for gen AI is to create entirely new businesses or revenue sources. They also highlight the potential for increasing the value of existing offerings through new AI-based features. This demonstrates the innovative mindset of companies that are leading the AI adoption curve.

Looking ahead, respondents predict that the adoption of AI will reshape many roles within the workforce. However, the general consensus is that more employees will be reskilled rather than separated from their current positions. Nearly four in ten respondents expect that over 20% of their companies' workforces will undergo reskilling efforts. On the other hand, only 8% of respondents anticipate a decrease in workforce size by more than 20%.

When specifically considering the impact of gen AI, it is primarily service operations that are expected to see a decrease in workforce size. This aligns with recent research that suggests gen AI has increased the estimate of worker activities that could be automated. However, it is important to note that this does not necessarily translate into the automation of entire roles.

As organizations navigate the evolving landscape of gen AI, it is crucial to consider the potential benefits and risks associated with this technology. Here are three actionable pieces of advice to help organizations effectively harness the power of gen AI:

  1. Prioritize accuracy: Given that inaccuracy is a top concern among respondents, organizations should invest in measures to ensure the reliability and accuracy of gen AI systems. This can be achieved through rigorous testing, data validation, and continuous monitoring.

Explore insetting: While carbon offsetting has gained traction as a means of mitigating environmental impact, an alternative approach called insetting offers a unique opportunity for individuals and organizations to take direct action. This approach allows for a more tangible and impactful contribution to combating climate change.

In conclusion, gen AI is experiencing a breakout year, with organizations recognizing its potential to transform industries. However, it is crucial for companies to manage the associated risks, prioritize accuracy, and invest in reskilling efforts.
