Reflecting on Experience: Unlocking Performance and Knowledge Management

Introduction:
In a study conducted by Harvard University, it was found that dedicating just 15 minutes a day to reflection can lead to a 23% increase in performance. This highlights the fact that we don't learn solely from experience, but rather from taking the time to reflect on and analyze our experiences. As John Dewey once said, "We do not learn from experience...we learn from reflecting on experience."

The Role of Knowledge Management Tools:
When it comes to knowledge management tools, their role should not be limited to being a permanent storage space. Instead, they should work in conjunction with a temporary storage space to facilitate archiving and deleting consumed content, thus avoiding the accumulation of noise and creating a "link graveyard." Matthew Guay, the creator of the writing tool "reproof," emphasizes the importance of valuing our thoughts and discoveries. He explains that we attach value to things we have spent time thinking about or discovering, as we have an aversion to loss. This concept of loss aversion, as explained by Daniel Kahneman in "Thinking, Fast and Slow," reveals that our reaction to losses is stronger than our reaction to gains.

The Significance of Writing and Identity Confirmation:
Writing down our thoughts and experiences is crucial, as it allows us to confirm our identity. Our sense of identity is often found in our relationships with others or in the consistency of our documented history. Over time, the data that connects our past and present selves serves as a means to know and reaffirm ourselves. It brings to mind the iconic character Motoko Kusanagi from the film "Ghost in the Shell" and her wristwatch, which externally symbolizes this concept.

Reasons for Documenting Content:
The behavior of individuals who strive to document content is intriguing and can be attributed to various reasons. Some people do it to enhance their ability to remember information, while others do it to organize specific content and gain a better understanding of its context and relevance. Additionally, individuals may choose to save valuable content for future reference or to enable self-analysis of their current thoughts and emotions. The fear of wasting the time and effort invested in collecting this content is also a driving factor.

The Importance of Filtering and Permanent Storage:
Temporary storage spaces, such as our personal note-taking databases, tend to accumulate a significant amount of noise. On the other hand, permanent storage spaces should primarily consist of high-quality, valuable information that can be easily accessed. When noise levels are high, efficiency is compromised. From a product perspective, people expect a single product or feature to serve a specific purpose. Switching to a different product or feature for different tasks aligns more logically with our emotions and mindset.

Matching Temporary and Permanent Storage:
While some individuals may successfully match their temporary and permanent storage spaces, it often requires a high level of filtering during the temporary storage phase or the ability to declutter accumulated content. In other words, the ability to declutter seems to be the key. This realization prompts the question of whether my own capture database in Notion requires decluttering. However, instead of decluttering, it might be more important to move content from the temporary storage space to the permanent storage space. Currently, I am simply creating bolding, highlighting, and summaries within the same database, but this information gets lost amidst the noise of the capture database. Therefore, it is crucial to transfer this information to the permanent storage space.

Minimizing Noise for Quality Content and Knowledge:
The ultimate goal is to create a space where only valuable content and knowledge accumulate, minimizing noise as much as possible. This notion of reducing noise is of utmost importance. Currently, Obsidian is becoming my permanent storage space, and I am contemplating whether transferring my "negima-style" notes to Obsidian is truly beneficial. I worry that it might increase noise levels.

Discovering the Insignificance of Ideas and Discoveries:
After constructing a galaxy of notes in Roam Research, Dan Shipper discovered that most of our ideas and discoveries hold little inherent value. This realization raises concerns about whether the same phenomenon will occur when transferring my "negima-style" notes to Obsidian.

Conclusion:
Reflection is key to unlocking performance and learning from experiences. By dedicating just 15 minutes a day to reflection, we can significantly improve our performance. Additionally, effective knowledge management involves finding a balance between temporary and permanent storage spaces, ensuring that noise is minimized in the latter. To achieve this, it is essential to filter and declutter content, allowing only valuable information to be retained. By understanding the significance of writing and identity confirmation, we can better grasp the importance of documenting our thoughts and experiences. Ultimately, creating a space where only high-quality content and knowledge accumulate is crucial for efficient knowledge management.

Actionable Advice:

  1. Set aside 15 minutes each day for reflection and analyze your experiences. Take note of what you have learned and how it can be applied to improve your performance.
  2. Regularly review and declutter your temporary storage space, ensuring that only valuable content is moved to your permanent storage space. This will minimize noise and allow for efficient knowledge management.
  3. When documenting content, ask yourself why it is worth saving. Consider its relevance, context, and how it can benefit your future self. This will help prioritize and filter content for effective retention.
