The fact that the brain can adapt in this way is encouraging. But it also creates a moral obligation. If a developmental window is open, the environment matters more, not less. That means poverty, lack of leave, poor sleep, relationship strain, and the pressure of perfectionist parenting are not background noise. They are active forces shaping adult biology and child outcomes.

That is the fundamental mismatch. We expect families to absorb enormous costs while treating the raising of children as a wholly private concern. Yet children are not merely personal projects. The question is whether we will build a world that lets that transformation unfold with dignity.
