The Impact of Self-Silencing on Women's Health and the Importance of Expression

Introduction:
Self-silencing, the act of suppressing one's own thoughts, emotions, and needs to please others and maintain harmony in relationships, has long been associated with women. However, recent research suggests that this cultural expectation of women to be agreeable and selfless may have serious implications for their health. Women today are experiencing a higher prevalence of autoimmune diseases, chronic pain, mental health disorders, and even an increased risk of mortality after a heart attack. In this article, we delve into the connection between self-silencing, women's health issues, and the need to break free from societal expectations.

The Relationship Between Women, Culture, and Health Issues:
It is alarming to note that women account for nearly 80% of autoimmune disease cases. Additionally, women are more prone to chronic pain, insomnia, fibromyalgia, long COVID, irritable bowel syndrome, and migraines. Furthermore, they face a higher risk of depression, anxiety, PTSD, and anorexia, which is considered the deadliest mental health disorder. These statistics highlight the urgent need to address the underlying causes of women's health issues.

Causes of Women's Health Issues:
Interestingly, the very qualities that society rewards in women, such as agreeability, extreme selflessness, and suppression of anger, may be contributing to their chronic illnesses and diseases. Psychologist Dana Jack observed a common pattern among female patients suffering from depression: a tendency to self-silence in an attempt to achieve intimacy and meet relational needs. This self-silencing behavior extends beyond psychological issues and has been linked to physical illnesses as well.

Self-Silencing in Illness:
Research conducted at the University of Pittsburgh revealed that women of color who strongly agreed with self-silencing statements were 70% more likely to experience increased carotid atherosclerosis, a cardiovascular plaque associated with a higher risk of heart attack. Other studies have connected self-silencing to conditions like irritable bowel syndrome, HIV, chronic fatigue syndrome, and cancer among women. Shockingly, women who didn't express themselves during marital conflicts were four times more likely to die than those who did, even after accounting for other risk factors.

The Impact of Culture and Self-Abnegation:
The cultural expectation for women to prioritize the needs of others above their own perpetuates self-silencing behaviors. This leads to a detrimental impact on women's physical and mental well-being. It is essential to recognize that these virtues of womanhood, which have been upheld for centuries, may not be virtuous at all. Instead, they are wreaking havoc on women's bodies and overall health.

Taking Back Emotional and Physical Health:
As a psychologist, I often encounter the challenge of helping clients reclaim their emotional and physical health within a cultural system that reinforces self-silencing. However, there are actionable steps that women can take to break free from this detrimental cycle:

  1. Practice Self-Expression: It is crucial for women to prioritize their own thoughts, emotions, and needs. Engaging in open and honest communication with loved ones, friends, and healthcare providers can help alleviate the burden of self-silencing.

  2. Seek Support: Building a strong support network of individuals who value and encourage self-expression is vital. Surrounding oneself with people who promote personal growth and self-care can positively impact overall well-being.

  3. Challenge Societal Expectations: By challenging societal norms and expectations placed on women, we can collectively create a more inclusive and empowering environment. Advocating for gender equality, promoting self-assertiveness, and celebrating diverse expressions of womanhood can contribute to a healthier and happier society.

Conclusion:
The detrimental effects of self-silencing on women's health cannot be ignored. It is imperative that we recognize the connection between cultural expectations, self-abnegation, and the prevalence of chronic illnesses among women. By encouraging self-expression, seeking support, and challenging societal norms, we can empower women to prioritize their own well-being and break free from the cycle of self-silencing. It is time to embrace a new narrative that values the voices and needs of women, leading to a healthier and more equitable future for all.
