The person who can export their mind gains reach without adding corresponding time. Their influence becomes less tied to a community and more tied to a platform.

A nation needs to decide what citizenship means, what obligations newcomers and institutions share, and what kind of future population growth is meant to support. A person using an AI memory system needs to decide what can be captured, what must remain private, what should be forgotten, and which decisions should never be delegated.

Apply it to AI memory. A person may benefit from continuous capture and intelligent recall. They need clear goals for the system, limits on collection, reliable data portability, deletion rights, and a way to distinguish their own judgment from the system’s inferences. They should know whether the assistant is serving them or gradually shaping them toward the platform’s interests.

The fourth principle, control, is the one most often neglected. People are encouraged to become more open, more connected, and more data rich. They are rarely given equivalent power over the infrastructure that receives their openness.

That imbalance converts participation into raw material.

The question is not whether you are included in a system. The question is whether your inclusion increases your power or someone else’s.

This also clarifies why abundance can produce its opposite. When a system accumulates more people, data, money, or connections than its governing structures can integrate, the surplus does not automatically enrich everyone. It can create congestion, dependency, competition, and loss of agency. Abundance becomes scarcity when control over the abundance is concentrated.

The constructive alternative is not isolation. It is open systems with strong civic and personal sovereignty.

For societies, this means treating immigration as part of nation building rather than as a moral symbol detached from material conditions. A serious policy asks what newcomers are being invited to build, what institutions will integrate them, and how existing citizens will share in the resulting gains. It rejects both fantasies: that openness always leads to decline, and that openness automatically produces prosperity.

For individuals, it means treating AI as a cognitive commons under personal control rather than as a black box that quietly absorbs a life. Before adopting an always on assistant, establish a personal constitution:

  • Define what the system may capture.
  • Separate sensitive relationships, health information, and private reflection from ordinary notes.
  • Require clear explanations for important recommendations.
  • Maintain an offline record of essential memories and decisions.

The goal is not to preserve an untouched self. Human identity has always been shaped by language, institutions, friends, books, and tools. The goal is to prevent the shaping process from becoming invisible and one sided.
