A statement can be accurate in isolation and still become misleading when attached to the wrong situation. Conversely, a system can sound confused because it is failing to show the boundaries between several different contexts.

The deeper lesson is unsettling: truth is not only about content. It is also about rightful attachment.

Certainty Begins With an Event, Not a Sentence

The Roman principle mater semper certa est, meaning “the mother is always certain,” is powerful because it anchors identity in a visible event. The person who gives birth is, at that moment, treated as the mother in a conclusive legal sense. The law does not ask a judge to weigh an endless collection of competing clues. It creates a decisive link between an event and a status.

This is more than a biological observation. It is an institutional shortcut for ending disputes. Once a child is born, the law needs an answer to a practical question: who occupies the legal role of mother? The principle supplies one immediately, and traditionally it does so with a level of force that excludes counter evidence.

The important feature is not merely that the answer is usually correct. It is that the answer is structurally attached to a specific act. Birth is the evidentiary anchor. The legal identity does not float freely through a database of statements. It arises from an event.

That distinction is easy to miss in an age dominated by text. When Context Collapses, Information Becomes a Crowd

Now consider a digital output that places unrelated items beside one another: patent identifiers, a branded medical product, instructions for exporting messages from a computer, and a historical question about torture in ancient Egypt. Each item could be meaningful on its own. A patent number can identify an invention. A medicine can raise questions of safety or ownership. Export instructions can be useful to someone preserving personal records. A question about ancient punishment can lead to serious historical inquiry.

The problem is not that the items are individually unintelligible. The problem is that their relations are missing.

Why are these things together? Are they search results? Fragments from prior conversations? Notes copied from several tasks? Suggestions generated from a hidden prompt? Without an account of their origin, the reader cannot tell whether the list is a meaningful response or a temporary collision of unrelated traces.

This is what context collapse looks like. Information from different situations is compressed into one surface, while the boundaries that once separated the situations disappear. The result may resemble knowledge because it contains recognizable facts. But recognition is not organization. A pile of labeled objects is not a map.

Human beings experience this problem too. Imagine opening a notebook and finding the following entries on one page:

  • Who or what is authorized to apply it here?

Consider a medical record. The phrase “patient uses this medication” is not enough. We need to know whether it came from the patient, a prescription database, an old note, or an inference from a pharmacy transaction. The same sentence carries different weight depending on its origin and date.

The ancient legal principle offers a contrasting model. It does not preserve every nuance of origin. Instead, it creates a bright line. At birth, a particular legal relationship is established through a particular event. This is efficient, but it also reveals the cost of certainty. A conclusive rule can stabilize a system, yet it can become strained when social arrangements, reproductive technologies, or legal definitions change.

So there are two opposite failures:

  1. Insufficient anchoring, where claims drift among contexts and no one knows what they belong to.
  2. Excessive closure, where a rule treats one form of evidence as final even when reality has become more complex.

Good institutions need to manage both. They must know when to close a question and when to preserve uncertainty.

A Practical Framework for Trustworthy Information

We can turn this tension into a simple framework called the Anchor, Boundary, and Use test.

1. Anchor: What event or source gives this claim its identity?

Every important assertion should have an anchor. The anchor may be a birth, a signed contract, a laboratory measurement, a direct observation, a recorded conversation, or a named publication.

If no anchor can be identified, the statement should be treated as provisional. It may still be useful as a hypothesis, but it should not silently become a fact.

For example, “this person is the mother” is anchored in the act of giving birth under the traditional legal principle. “This medication was prescribed” should be anchored in an actual prescription, not merely in a mention of the product.

2. Boundary: What does the claim not tell us?

A claim is safer when its limits are visible. The fact that a person gave birth establishes one legal relationship. It does not, by itself, answer every question about genetics, custody, intention, or caregiving.

Likewise, a patent record establishes that a legal filing exists. It does not prove that the invention works, that a product is safe, or that the patent remains enforceable. 3. Use: What decision is this information being asked to support?

The same claim can be acceptable for orientation and unacceptable for action. The higher the stakes, the stronger the required provenance.

This framework is useful when working with artificial intelligence, but it is not limited to machines. Ask it of a news article, a spreadsheet, a legal memo, or your own memory. Much of what we call “bad information” is information that has crossed a boundary without carrying its context along.

Designing Systems That Know What They Know

The goal should not be to eliminate every fragment, association, or uncertain idea. Discovery often begins with fragments. A researcher may notice a surprising connection between legal identity and digital memory precisely because unrelated materials happen to appear together.

The goal is to make the status of each fragment legible.

A trustworthy system should distinguish at least four layers:

  • Observed: directly recorded or experienced.
  • Retrieved: taken from an identifiable external source.
  • Inferred: produced by reasoning from other information.
  • Speculative: offered as a possibility rather than a conclusion.

These categories need not make communication cumbersome. A short phrase can do a great deal of work: “The record shows,” “This appears to come from,” “A possible explanation is,” or “This remains uncertain.” Such labels restore the missing architecture around a claim.

Individuals can adopt the same practice. When saving notes, preserve the question that generated them. When copying a quotation, include its source and date. When asking an AI system for help, separate tasks rather than blending unrelated requests. When receiving a confident answer, ask not only “Is this true?” but also “What makes this relevant here?”

The mature question is not merely, “Can I believe this?” It is, “What would make belief in this claim responsible?”

This shift changes how we think about certainty. Certainty is no longer a volume setting on a sentence. It is a relationship among evidence, context, authority, and consequence.
