“Ask me clarifying questions until you are 95% confident you can complete the task(s) successfully. State your confidence score.”
“What would a top subject matter expert in this field think about your answers?”
“Do not hallucinate.”
Intentionality: Knowing what you want before you ask •Structure: Organizing your thoughts in ways AI can process •Context: Providing the background information AI needs •Clarity: Being specific about outputs, formats, and expectations •Iteration: Refining and improving through conversation
Clear sections: Breaking your request into distinct parts •Defined parameters: Specifying length, format, tone, audience •Explicit organization: Telling AI how you want information arranged •Success criteria: Explaining what “good” looks like
LLMs are context-dependent: They don’t have memory of previous conversations unless you provide it (and you should!). They don’t know your background, preferences, or goals unless you tell them (as you should!). Every prompt exists in isolation unless you explicitly connect it to previous context. •LLMs are pattern-matching systems: They work best when you give them clear patterns to follow. If you want a specific format, show them an example. If you want a particular style, describe it clearly or provide samples. •LLMs are instruction-followers: They try to follow your instructions, but they interpret them literally. If you say “write a short article,” they’ll write something short—but “short” might mean 300 words to them and 1,500 words to you. Be specific. •LLMs are probabilistic, not deterministic: They don’t always produce the same output for the same input. This means iteration is essential. If you don’t get what you want the first time, refine your prompt and try again.
Prompting is the art and science of translating your intentions, needs, and goals into structured communication that AI can understand and act upon. It’s about providing enough context, clarity, and constraints that AI can produce outputs that genuinely help you, rather than generic responses that require extensive editing.
Effective prompting requires: •Understanding what you actually need (not just what you think you want) •Structuring your request in ways AI can process •Providing context that helps AI understand the “why” behind your request •Setting clear constraints and parameters •Being willing to iterate and refine
Principle 1: Clarity — Say Exactly What You Want, But Be Detailed and Descriptive
