There’s no better way to do this than to start contributing.
Then, figure out, in advance, precisely how you are going to demonstrate that you are those things. Don’t tell them, show them.
Earning the right has three parts: Understanding the client’s situation Understanding how the client feels about it
Convincing the client that we understand both of the previous two items
Simple devices like taking notes and reviewing them before the next meeting can help a lot. (There is a lot of “contact software” around nowadays to facilitate this.)
