What Are the Five Processes of Evolution?

TL;DR

The five processes of evolution are genetic drift due to chance, non-random mating, mutations, gene flow (movement in and out of populations), and natural selection. While all but natural selection can cause changes in gene frequencies, only natural selection leads to adaptations that improve a species' fit to its environment.

Transcript

The Five Fingers of Evolution. A thorough understanding of biology requires a thorough understanding of the process of evolution. Most people are familiar with the process of natural selection. However, this is just one of five processes that can result in evolution. Before we discuss all five of these processes, we should define evolution. Evoluti... Read More

Key Insights

  • ⌛ Evolution is simply change in the gene pool over time, and it involves reshuffling genes.
  • 💐 There are five processes that can cause the frequency of genes to change: chance, mating choices, mutation, gene flow, and natural selection.
  • ❓ While the first four processes can cause evolution, only natural selection results in adaptations.
  • 👱 Red hair is an example of an adaptation that was advantageous in certain climates but disadvantageous in others.
  • 🫰 The thumb represents natural selection, as it creates adaptations that are better suited to the local environment.
  • 🛩️ Microevolution refers to small changes in evolution, while macroevolution refers to speciation.
  • 🫒 All living organisms on the planet share a common ancestor and are connected through the process of evolution.

Summary & Key Takeaways

  • Evolution is the change in the gene pool over time, and it involves various processes.

  • The five processes that can cause evolution are: chance (population shrinking), mating choices, mutation, gene flow (movement), and natural selection (adaptation).

  • Natural selection is the only process that leads to adaptations for the local environment.
