The optical pattern recognition system idea shifted when I realized its potential to recognize letters and words, allowing the blind to access printed information. Though the idea had already been used by the national security agency to recognize Soviet faxes, the technology was not economically feasible for a reading machine. However, through Benetech, we were able to develop a reading machine that has transformed the lives of people with visual impairments.

The failure of the rocket company, combined with a desire to create a social impact, led me to start a nonprofit technology company. I realized that focusing on technology to address unmet needs in the social sector was a powerful way to help others, and Benetech was born out of that vision.
