Q: What were some of the key learnings from your experience with Momo, a mobile payments app?

One key learning was the importance of infrastructure and support for successful business operations. We had to partner with Wi-Fi providers to enable payments in areas with poor mobile connectivity. We also learned the significance of product-market fit and saw the impact of word-of-mouth advertising when we launched mobile payments at a toll booth.

Q: Why did you decide to exit Momo and sell to Shopclues?

We realized the need for rapid scale and broader reach in order to compete with larger players in the payment industry. With the introduction of UPI and increasing regulation, it became difficult for us to sustain our business model. We sought an anchor who could provide a nationwide merchant network, leading us to Shopclues.

Q: What led you to start Flatheads and what were the main challenges you faced?

We saw an opportunity in the casual sneaker market in India, given the shift toward casual wear at work and the demand for comfortable shoes suitable for the Indian climate. One of the main challenges was pricing, as we had to find the right balance between affordability and quality. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted our launch plans and forced us to rethink our marketing strategy.

Q: How has participating in Shark Tank impacted your journey with Flatheads?

The episode provided a platform for increased brand awareness and generated goodwill for Flatheads. It also sparked conversations with investors, but the timing of the show airing and the market conditions made it difficult to secure funding immediately.
