Bias is the tendency to allow individual differences such as age, race, and sex to affect the appraisal ratings employees receive. Biased appraisals have various causes. One is rater personality. For example, raters who score higher on ā€œconscientiousnessā€ tend to give their peers lower ratingsā€”they were stricter, in other words.

Performance ratings amplify the quality of the personal relationship between boss and employee. Good relationships tend to create good appraisal experiences, bad relationships bad ones. Unfortunately, subordinatesā€™ demographic traits (age, race, gender, and so on) also affect ratings.
