Lessons from Apple: The Power of Connections and Collaboration in Product Design

Apple is known for its innovative and groundbreaking products, and as a product designer who had the opportunity to work at Apple, I learned valuable lessons about the importance of connections and collaboration in the design process. The way Apple approaches product design is unique and can only be successful due to their business model, which emphasizes the power of teamwork and interconnectedness.

One of the things that surprised me the most during my time at Apple was the emphasis on sharing work through keynote decks. For any piece of work being shared, designers would put together a keynote deck to present their ideas and progress. This practice not only allowed for effective communication among team members but also fostered a culture of collaboration and feedback. By sharing work in this way, designers were able to receive input from different perspectives, leading to better and more refined designs.

This emphasis on collaboration and feedback is in line with the understanding that our knowledge economy operates on the complexities of connections. In today's interconnected world, individuals, teams, communities, and systems are all part of a larger economic web that influences and is influenced by each participant. No longer can we focus solely on the performance of individual actors; we must focus on the performance of the connected whole.

The traditional hierarchical organizational structure, which worked well for 100 years, is no longer suitable for the demands of the connected economy. With the influx of computers, copious amounts of data, and rapid information flows, it became clear that individual mastery was no longer the key to success. Instead, it was the combination of human capital and social capital working together to create productivity and innovation.

This shift in thinking was also reflected in the research conducted by management scholars. John Kotter of the Harvard Business School discovered that effective general managers spend more than 80 percent of their time interacting with others. Conversations and relationships were identified as crucial elements of managerial work. This finding further emphasized the importance of connections and collaboration in achieving organizational objectives.

Based on my experience at Apple and the insights gained from the research, here are three actionable pieces of advice for product designers in the 21st century:

  1. Foster a culture of collaboration: Encourage open communication and feedback among team members. Create opportunities for designers to share their work and receive input from different perspectives. This collaborative approach will lead to better designs and more innovative solutions.

  2. Embrace interconnectedness: Recognize that your work is part of a larger ecosystem. Understand how your designs and decisions impact other stakeholders and systems. By considering the interconnectedness of your work, you can design products that align with the overall goals and objectives of the organization.

  3. Invest in relationships: Take the time to build strong relationships with your colleagues and stakeholders. Engage in conversations and create connections that go beyond the surface level. These relationships will not only enhance collaboration but also open doors to new opportunities and insights.

In conclusion, my time at Apple taught me valuable lessons about the power of connections and collaboration in product design. By embracing a culture of collaboration, recognizing the interconnectedness of our work, and investing in relationships, we can create designs that not only meet the needs of our users but also contribute to the success of the organization as a whole. In the connected economy, it is the performance of the connected whole that truly matters.
