The board aims to provide recommendations on AI governance by the end of the year.

The potential of AI for sustainable development is enormous. It has the power to amplify the work of governments, civil society, and the UN itself in various areas, including crisis prediction and response, as well as the provision of public health and education services. By leveraging AI responsibly and ensuring its accessibility for all, developing countries can leave behind outdated technologies and directly deliver much-needed services to those who need them the most.

However, there are also challenges and potential risks associated with AI. Currently, specialized knowledge in the field is concentrated in a few companies and countries, which can deepen global inequalities and widen the digital divide. The misuse of AI can lead to the spread of misinformation, reinforcement of biases and discrimination, surveillance, privacy violations, fraud, and other human rights violations. It can also erode trust in institutions, weaken social cohesion, and threaten democracy.

To address these challenges, the Advisory Board on AI aims to formulate recommendations on international AI governance, shared understanding of risks and challenges, and opportunities and key factors for leveraging AI to accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
