Living the Good Life: Embracing the Present and Nurturing Relationships
Why the fuck are people so obsessed with what happens when you die? Look, once you’re dead you can’t feel a goddamn thing, so get over it. We have bigger, more important things to worry about: how to live the good. fucking. life. That’s it - that’s what is important. We’re only here for so long, and if we fail to make the most of it, we have wasted our lives.
Stop taking life too seriously as if everything would be relevant for the next thousand years. It's not worth it, nothing important is important if you connect it with the next fifty years, nothing fixed is fixed if you do the same, also, life operates in countless combinations of events, and even a tiny change can turn life upside down. So why worry about particular things and aspects? Just give your best and chill, let life unfold itself.
How do you deal with an attraction to other people when you’re married? My wife and I honeymooned in Aruba. As is the case with most tropical destinations, the beach was full of people wearing as little as they could get away with. Late one afternoon, as my wife and I were enjoying cocktails and getting ready to watch the sunset over the water, this absolutely stunning figure passed in front of us. I’m normally not one to creepily stare, but my jaw dropped and my eyes followed them as they kept walking. I couldn’t help it; this was one of the most beautiful examples of the human race I had ever seen. They were fit, had a beautiful skin complexion, perfect hair, and their swimsuit left very little to the imagination. My new wife took notice of the daze I was in. “I know what you’re staring at…” This snapped me out of it and brought me back down to earth. “You’re staring at that really buff guy that just walked by.” We both had a good laugh about it and went back to our sunset. Just because you’re married doesn’t mean you won’t ever find someone else attractive ever again. But once you’ve entered a monogamous marriage, other people you might recognize as attractive should be nothing more than museum exhibits. Sometimes you can’t help but look, but you should never touch. If you’re already in a monogamous marriage and are having trouble keeping your thoughts and urges in check, then maybe you need to start doing some digging to figure out why.
Living the good life is about embracing the present and nurturing relationships. It's about recognizing that our time here is limited and making the most of every moment. While contemplating the afterlife may be intriguing, it should not consume us to the point of neglecting the present.
In the pursuit of the good life, it's crucial to adopt a more relaxed approach and not take everything too seriously. Life is a series of unpredictable events, and fixating on specific outcomes or aspects can hinder our ability to adapt and find joy in the present. Instead, we should give our best in every endeavor while allowing life to unfold naturally.
One aspect of living the good life involves navigating attractions outside of our committed relationships. It's natural to find others attractive, even when married. However, the key lies in acknowledging these attractions without acting upon them. In a monogamous marriage, recognizing the beauty in others should be akin to appreciating artwork in a museum – a momentary admiration that does not jeopardize the commitment made to our partner.
To maintain fidelity in a monogamous relationship, it may be necessary to delve into the root causes of any struggles in keeping thoughts and urges in check. Understanding personal motivations, insecurities, or unfulfilled needs can help address these challenges and strengthen the bond with our partner. Seeking professional help, engaging in open and honest communication, or exploring personal growth opportunities are actionable steps towards maintaining a healthy and committed relationship.
In conclusion, living the good life requires focusing on the present, nurturing relationships, and remaining committed to our partners. By embracing the limited time we have and letting go of unnecessary worries about the future, we can find fulfillment and happiness in the here and now. Remember, attractions outside of a committed relationship are natural, but it is our responsibility to ensure they remain as fleeting thoughts and never cross the boundaries of fidelity. By taking proactive steps to address any challenges, we can cultivate a strong and lasting connection with our partner, ultimately enriching our journey towards the good life.
