At that point, a lot of “normal” population problems no longer apply in the same way.

This does not mean people become invulnerable. It means risk is not destiny. It means the category “everyone is at risk” is often a lazy flattening of differences. It means your body’s location on the map matters.

The antidote to both cynicism and blind trust is systems literacy. Systems literacy means learning to ask better questions.

A good map maker does not insist the traveler ignore the landscape. A good clinician should not insist the patient ignore their own history, habits, and embodied knowledge.

The hard truth is that systems, whether medical, bureaucratic, or educational, often reward conformity to protocols more than discernment. That is not necessarily because everyone involved is malicious. More often, it is because large systems are built to be scalable, and scalability prefers simplification. But simplification becomes dangerous when it is mistaken for truth.

The goal, then, is not to become anti institution. It is to become hard to manipulate. The person who understands terrain is less frightened by a single finding, less impressed by a single test, and less likely to confuse a professional tone for epistemic certainty.
