That's right, Africa. We're going to Africa today. In our last lesson, we learned about the tiniest little bird. Do you remember what it was? Yes, the hummingbird. Good job, boys and girls. Kiss your brain. If the hummingbird is the smallest bird, then what is the biggest?

The ostrich. That's what we're going to learn about today. Let's look at our ostrich. God made this big bird. Can this bird make a nest in a tree? No, he cannot. He's way too big. Look at his big body and his small head. But he has great big eyes, eyes as big as this. And do you know what? He lives in the grasslands. Say it with me, grasslands. That's a big open area where ostriches can run around. They have big eyelashes to keep the dust and sand out of their eyes.

God gave them those big eyes and long eyelashes to help them stay safe. Now look at his legs. God gave the ostrich very strong legs with big muscles. That's why he can run so fast. Sometimes, lions try to catch the ostrich, but the ostrich can run away very quickly, as fast as a car driving down the road. Can you run that fast? No, we can't. But ostriches can. And look at his toes, two big toes with sharp claws.

If a lion tries to attack, the ostrich can kick hard with his strong legs and use those claws to protect himself. God made him that way so he can stay safe. Now, look at these two ostriches, the one with black feathers is the daddy, and the one with brown feathers is the mommy. When it's time to lay eggs, the daddy digs a big hole in the ground, and the mommy lays her eggs in that hole. Let's count them: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.

During the day, the brown mommy sits on the eggs. Her feathers help her camouflage, that means she blends in with the grass and the dirt. At night, the daddy takes his turn to sit on the eggs and keep them warm. Ostrich eggs are very big, as big as a football. They have to be strong, because the mommy and daddy sit on them. They also keep the eggs cool. Their bodies give shade like an umbrella, so the eggs don't get too hot under the sun.

Isn't that amazing? And when the baby ostrich is one month old, he can already run around and play. Wow. Human babies can't do that, but God made ostriches special. God made the ostrich just the way he wanted it to be. And God made you special, too, different from animals, but perfect in the way he planned. I'm so glad we learned about this big, strong, fast bird today, the ostrich. God made it to live safely in Africa's grasslands.
