About the Video

There are over 27,000 known near-Earth asteroids and more than 100 known near-Earth comets. These objects range from few meters to several kms. Didymos is one of those near-Earth asteroids with a diameter of over 780 meters. To save Earth from the impact of these objects, NASA started the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission back in 2018 with an objective to smash a probe into Didymos and see whether it can deflect an asteroid.

Tomorrow, on 24 November 2021, the mission will be launched from SpaceX Falcon 9. DART will begin its 7 million miles journey and reach Didymos in a time of 12 months. One year later, on 2 October 2022, with a speed of 6.6 km/s DART will smash into Didymos and change its trajectory that can be observed from Earth.
