About the Video
Louis Slotin was a Canadian physicist and chemist who helped design Cyclotron, a particle accelerator. Due to his brilliance, government had an eye on him. In 1942, he was invited in the Manhattan Project an exciting one time offer he could not refuse. As a part of the Manhattan Project, Slotin performed experiments with uranium and plutonium cores and helped in determining their critical mass values.
In 1946, while Slotin was working with an unknown element he accidentally began a fission reaction. Reaction was so strong, it released a burst of hard radiation. Slotin knew that everyone's life in the room was in danger and the radiation could kill everyone. To protect his colleagues, he covered the material with his body while his colleagues ran towards safety.
