0This August, Cayden and I set out on a new adventure to explore one of Washington’s hidden gems—The Feathers in Frenchman Coulee, near Vantage. Known for its stunning rock formations and epic climbing routes, this area has been on our radar for a while, and we were thrilled to finally experience it firsthand.
As we arrived, the towering basalt columns of The Feathers greeted us, a striking reminder of the powerful forces that shaped this region millions of years ago. Formed by ancient volcanic activity and later sculpted by massive ice-age floods, The Feathers stand as a testament to nature’s raw power. The landscape is rugged and otherworldly, with the towering rock formations resembling a giant’s playground.
For us, The Feathers weren’t just about admiring from afar—they were a challenge to conquer. Known in the rock-climbing community for its accessible routes, The Feathers didn’t disappoint. With over 60 routes to choose from, we found options suitable for both Cayden and me, ranging from easier climbs to more challenging ascents.
Climbing here in August meant dealing with some intense heat, but we tackled the climbs early in the morning when the rocks were still cool, and the light was perfect for capturing those epic shots. Each route we conquered offered not only a physical challenge but also stunning views of the surrounding Columbia River and the vast Coulee.
When we weren’t scaling the basalt cliffs, we took time to explore the area’s hiking trails. The Frenchman Coulee Loop, a moderate 4-mile trail, was a highlight of our visit. It led us through the heart of the Coulee, offering close-up views of the unique rock formations and panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape. The area was quieter than we expected, giving us the sense of having this magnificent place all to ourselves.
One of the surprises of our hike was spotting local wildlife, including a few lizards and some impressive birds of prey soaring high above the cliffs. The contrast between the stark, rocky terrain and the vibrant life it supports made our hike even more memorable.
Our August visit to The Feathers was everything we hoped for and more. From the challenging climbs to the serene hikes and unforgettable night under the stars, this trip was a perfect blend of adventure and tranquility. The Feathers may be a hidden gem, but they’re a treasure worth discovering.
If you’re ever in Washington and looking for a place that offers both excitement and natural beauty, The Feathers should definitely be on your list. Cayden and I left with a deep appreciation for this incredible landscape and can’t wait to return for more adventures.
