This Week's Reading List 📚
How
to know what you really want by Luke
Burgis (28min)
Desire is a social process – it is mimetic. Because
desire is mimetic, people are naturally drawn to
want what others want. Your desires can become
hijacked through this process of mimetic attraction.
It’s easy to become obsessively focused on what your
neighbors have or want, rather than on your
immediate responsibilities and relationship
commitments.
The
Future of Learning by Niklas Goke
(10min)
Learning is a state of mind. If your mind is always
open, you’re always learning. And if it’s closed,
nothing has a real chance of sinking in. If we
focus only on the activity of learning, we miss the
most important part: Unless we’re willing to change
our perspective, we won’t grasp a thing. The
longer we can hold opposing ideas in our heads
without rejecting them, the more granular the
picture that ultimately forms.
Social
Status: Down the Rabbit Hole | Melting
Asphalt by Kevin Simler (21min)
The beginning of wisdom about social status is
learning to distinguish its two (and only two)
primary forms: dominance and prestige. Dominance
works by inspiring fear and other "avoidance"
instincts, while prestige inspires admiration and
other "approach" instincts. Admiration, rather than
prestige-seeking, is the lynchpin of the prestige
system. Prestige status is "the public
knowledge that you possess assets that would allow
you to help others if you wished to." In other
words, prestige reflects your value as a teammate,
whether actual or potential.
See you next week ;)
Best,
Kei and Kazuki
