Alice Walker coined the term "womanist" to describe Black women who are committed to the well-being of all of humanity. Womanism combines race, class, and gender oppression in its fight against discrimination. It opposes sexism in the Black community and racism in the feminist community. Womanism focuses on the experiences and concerns of women of color, particularly Black women, and seeks connections and solidarity with Black men. Womanist theology centers the experiences of Black women in the analysis of theology and ethics, aiming to eliminate oppression in the lives of Black Americans and humanity as a whole.
