The Supreme Court has asked the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment to inform it of the steps taken to stop manual scavenging and abolish dry latrines. The Ministry has to file an affidavit containing the information within six weeks and the matter will be taken up again on April 12, 2023. The Court has also added National Commission for Safai Karamcharis, the National Commission for Scheduled Castes, and the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes as respondents. This is part of the Court's effort to ensure the elimination of manual scavenging and dry latrines in India.
