The double bind is a big problem. When we do what is right according to one system, we do something wrong according to the other. This isn’t only an issue with restrictive religious environments, of course, but in any environment with one set of rules that conflicts with or even directly contradicts another set of rules.
“It seems like you feel guilty about a lot of things unnecessarily. So maybe guilt isn’t a reliable indicator of whether you should do something.”
Does this idea actually feel right to me? How does my body respond when I think about it? Does a deep part of me recoil? Would I want this for someone I love?
I was so busy trying not to fail that I rarely paused to question whether it was a game worth playing.
