Zahir-ud-din Muhammad was born in the town of Andijan, in the Fergana Valley in present-day Uzbekistan as a member of the Barlas tribe, a group of Mongol extraction. He has become better known to history under the name given to him as a result of his success as a military commander, Babur (meaning “tiger”).
The next ruler of the Mughal was Humayun’s 14-year-old son, Abu’l-Fath Jalal-ud-din Muhammad, who was to become known as Akbar the Great.
The creation of the Taj Mahal, for example, was said to have involved 20,000 men working over a period of 12 years.
