SINCE 1972 BOAT MANUFACTURERS have been required to mold a 12-character hull identification number (HIN) into the transom. The prescribed code is easy to decipher. It generally looks something like this: PEA74155L485. The first three characters are the manufacturer, the next five the model designation and the production number in the series.
