State supreme courts have allowed new bans to take effect, while others declined to block the laws. Clinics have closed in states where bans are now enforced and opened in others where abortion remains legal. State legislatures are debating new restrictions and protections. Citizen-led initiatives are pushing to add the right to an abortion to state constitutions. Municipalities in some states where abortion remains legal have tried to ban abortion within their communities.

Most states where Republicans hold the majority in both chambers of the legislature as well as the governorship—known as a trifecta—are enforcing bans on most abortions. Nearly all states with a Democratic trifecta have passed laws or approved constitutional amendments protecting abortion access.
